Was It Good?

KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN SUN #14 follows the most important rule of any story when confronting a more powerful villain – it remembers the double-tap. For those of you not in the know about the rules of horror films, the rule is designed to remind the main hero(s) to never assume the villain is dead. Double-tap the body to make sure the villain is dead.

This issue marks the end of the second volume, and it does so in spectacular fashion. The Archangels assemble for a winner-take-all showdown against Metatron, and London properly sets the stage with Metatron as the superior foe against all the Archangels combined. It’s a proper setting because it firmly establishes a true threat for the heroes to overcome. If they combine forces and win out of hand, there’s no dramatic tension. Here, there’s dramatic tension enough for everyone and room to spare.

The notable high point of this issue is how well London succeeds in making this feel like a complete conclusion to the chapter while setting up what’s to come with a prologue that raises the stakes even higher. You get a healthy mix of satisfaction from the ending and a healthy tease to build anticipation for the next volume. The structure of this story feels right.

Of course, the other highlight of this series is Villarreal’s art, particularly with the colors from Villarreal with assistance from Castillo. The shading and layers add an impression of weight and solidity to all the characters, and the points of light make every character accent glow with energy in a way you don’t see in practically any comic these days. This comic exudes energy and power from the coloring alone.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

It’s been a while since the last issue, so catch up by reading our KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN SUN #13 review.

We begin with a brief flashback to Cassander and Alexander (before he becomes Metatron) in happier times. They discuss Alexander’s ambition for conquest, not knowing how prophetic their casual conversation would be.

Now, we join the final battle as the Archangels, equipped with the recovered pieces from the Armor of God, face off against Metatron on the battlefield. Without pause the opposing forces attack, and the rest of the issue is essentially one long battle. Again, Metatron solo is more powerful than any four Archangels combined.

We conclude the issue with a plea for reason, a plea for death, and the scroll ultimately winding up in the hands of somebody infinitely dangerous.

Final Thoughts

KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN SUN #14 ends the current volume in grand style with a battle for the ages. The story builds through the action to give readers a satisfying conclusion, while tossing in a jaw-dropping tease for what’s to come. The art is something else, in the best way, with colors that are positively magnetic.
