Is KNIGHT WATCHMAN: CREATURES OF THE KNIGHT #2 Good?
The (k)nights in Midway City are getting creepier by the minute in Midway City when KNIGHT WATCHMAN: CREATURES OF THE KNIGHT #2 delivers monsters, monster hunters, and more in Chris Ecker’s homage to Frank Miller. Mix Sin City with the Dark Knight Returns, and throw in monsters for good measure, and you’ll be on the right track.
When last we left Knight Watchman and his eclectic cast of characters, the titular hero found out Red Ted was resurrected into a masked behemoth calling himself Afterlife. Monroe Willis stalked the city streets to find his missing mentor. Pinkie and Fritz developed a plan to give the vampire cult legitimacy. Now, Willis finds Knight Watchman under Afterlife’s gruff care, a man carrying an Egyptian curse is visited by an acolyte, and a vampire hunter comes to town just in time.
Whew! That’s a lot. In truth, you’re going to need a scorecard for this issue to keep track of who’s who and what’s what. Each scene is interesting enough as a piece in a larger puzzle, but this is one of those puzzles that take up the whole table.
What’s great about KNIGHT WATCHMAN: CREATURES OF THE KNIGHT #2? Ecker’s plot is a bit of a mess, but the aesthetic makes this issue completely readable. The individual scenes are well done, and it’s almost turned into a party game figuring out who’s a real vampire and who’s faking it because they’re nuts.
What’s not so great about KNIGHT WATCHMAN: CREATURES OF THE KNIGHT #2? Yeah, the plot’s a bit of a mess. The scenes don’t string together in a clear direction, scenes are placed to introduce new characters without any obvious purpose, and the transitions from one location to the next are non-existent.
How’s the art? Truly, this issue is some of the best work we’ve seen from any Big Bang comic. Ben Torres draws inspiration from Frank Miller’s most renowned works, ala Dark Knight Returns and Sin City while keeping the style clean enough to stand on its own. If nothing else, the art earns top marks.

Check out our KNIGHT WATCHMAN: CREATURES OF THE KNIGHT #1 review to find out how Knight Watchman found the late Red Ted.
We begin with the arrival of Det. Radu Wallach for an exchange program between Budapest and Midway City. Wallach intervenes in an arrest where the perp claims to be a vampire, and the intervention proves otherwise.
Elsewhere, Monroe Willis follows the tracking signal after he lost contact with Knight Watchman hours ago. The signal leads to Monroe’s old home, but his investigation is interrupted by a gang that believes Monroe is a vampire. After a brief scuffle, Monroe gets away and finds Knight Watchman held by Red Ted, aka Afterlife.
We conclude the issue with a cursed cat man, a police standoff with Afterlife, and a stake through the heart.

Final Thoughts

KNIGHT WATCHMAN: CREATURES OF THE KNIGHT #2 introduces more monsters, creeps, and potential allies for Knight Watchman when real and fake vampires come to Midway City. Ecker makes each scene a fun moment to grab your attention, but the cohesiveness in a clear plot is wholly absent. As a plus, Ben Torres’s art style is a fantastic homage to Frank Miller’s best works.
