Analysis of KING SPAWN #40:
Plot:
In King Spawn #40, we meet Steve, a proud father giving a speech during his son’s wedding reception on the night the war with Hell ended. Sadly, David is a demon who decided to live as a human decades ago, but his disguise disappears at the worst possible moment. For months, Steve tried to find a way to regain his powers, change his appearance, and erase the memories of his alter-ego from his friends and family. When nothing works, Steve decides to gain a different kind of power and seek revenge against Spawn for ruining his life.
Artwork and Presentation:
Yildiray Çinar delivers a masterful set of visuals as Steve the Demon is forced to sneak around, seek help, and suffer the tragic loss of his family at every turn. In particular, Yildiray Çinar nails the look of shock and horror on the faces of his loved ones when his human disguise disappears.

Character Work:
King Spawn #40 is a Steve-centric issue, so Spawn only appears in a few pages. However, Rory McConville digs deep to paint Steve as a “human” demon trying to reclaim what he lost, becoming more frustrated and desperate with every dead end.
Pacing:
Rory McConville does a commendable job keeping the pace brisk by ensuring the scenes transition smoothly and using every scene to stack tension through Failure on Steve. Steve’s building frustration keeps the reader locked in.
Strongest Point(s):
By far, the highlight of this issue is Rory McConville’s character work as he paints Steve the Demon as a tragic character pushed to extreme measures when his life is destroyed.
Weakest Point(s):
The final panel cliffhanger is, admittedly, a cool twist, but the reveal suggests that a certain character’s powers are becoming overused (no spoilers here as to who it is) and therefore diluted.
Final Thoughts:

KING SPAWN #40 is a tragic tale about a peaceful demon whose life is destroyed by the outcome of the Heaven/Hell War. Rory McConville’s revenge quest is an interesting look at the fallout from the Heaven/Hell War from a unique perspective, and Yildiray Çinar’s art is on point.
