Analysis of KING SPAWN #37:
First Impressions:
This title is nothing if not consistent. One of the challenges of having parallel titles in the same Spawnverse, starring the same character, is keeping the pace and big plot moments aligned without conflicts. The way Todd McFarlane appears to keep that alignment is by leaning on a very thin plot while delivering eye-popping action in return. That’s fine if you’re just into this title for the art, but readers who want more will find this issue lacking.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left Spawn in King Spawn #36, Spawn enlisted the help of the cybernetically enhanced ape, Cy-Gor, to disrupt a group of angels who were responsible for Granny Blake’s kidnapping. Meanwhile, Bludd expresses his displeasure towards the angels who failed to take Spawn down.
In King Spawn #37, Tyrone gives the signal to open fire on Spawn and Cy-Gor. Spawn’s recently upgraded armor repels the crossbow attacks, but Cy-Gor takes some damage. Instead of retreating, the damage only enrages the ape and sends him into a furious attack.
Todd McFarlane wastes no time leaping into action. Spawn and Cy-Gor prove to be formidable, even as mortals, so whatever damage they take only urges them to take down all comers. If you want a comic with fast-paced, close-quartered action, this is it.
Tyrone and his angels aren’t nearly as effective as Spawn and Cy-Gor in a fight, but what they lack in skill, they make up for in numbers. Tyrone calls in reinforcements to overwhelm our heroes. However, Spawn planned for Tyrone’s tactics, so he and Cy-Gor pull out a special move we’ll call the “Spinning Spawn-o-Matic.”
Sure, we’re getting cheeky with the names, but that’s what happened. It’s unclear if the move is cool or goofy. Perhaps it’s a little bit of both, but either way, it gets the job done.
The issue concludes with a ticking clock, a turned table, and the start of new negotiations… maybe.
Overall, King Spawn #37 is little more than an excuse for Spawn and Cy-Gor to go ape (*ahem*) in a room full of morally corrupt angels. There’s not much to report on the plot because there really isn’t one, but this issue serves its purpose of giving you at least a wow moment or two.
Artwork and Presentation:
King Spawn #37 is the second issue we’ve encountered with Yildiray Çinar as the lead artist, and we’re still impressed with the final product. Çinar’s hard-hitting poses and fight choreography bear the burden of carrying this issue, so its success is Çinar’s win.

The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
King Spawn #37 incorporates the consequences of the Heaven/Hell War, but the plot (what little there is of it) remains focused on Bludd leveraging the powerlessness of his enemies to eliminate them and take over the world. There’s no mention of Nyx or what she’s up to.

KING SPAWN #37 barely has a plot, but what it lacks in the story, it makes up for with Spawn and Cy-Gor going bananas in a room full of mortal angels. McFarlane’s script is all about the action, specifically a new power move you won’t see coming. Thankfully, Çinar’s awesome art grabs your eyeballs long enough to forget the lack of story.
