Is KING SPAWN #30 Good?

KING SPAWN #30 offers a poignant exploration of the relationship between Al and Wanda, now separated not only by death but by the realms of Heaven and Hell. In the previous issue, Wanda discovered Spawn after his intense battle against demons in the outer circles of Hell. Spawn regains consciousness, realizing Wanda aided him. They reminisce about their past, and a significant discussion ensues regarding Spawn’s duty to protect Earth from the impending threat of Sinn and Clown taking over the throne of Hell.

The issue beautifully portrays their deep connection, transcending physical attraction, evolving into a profound, almost Biblical, love. The narrative progresses as they move to the next level of Hell, joining the ongoing battle previously seen in Spawn #349. Despite the chronological confusion due to release dates, the story aligns with the larger Heaven and Hell War.

On a side note, you’ll notice on the main cover Spawn in the background with crime scene tape, and Sam and Twitch in the foreground. Strangely, Sam and Twitch have no relevance to the comic’s storyline, making their presence on the cover puzzling.

What did we appreciate about KING SPAWN #30? The emotional depth of Al and Wanda’s relationship is tenderly portrayed. Their love, despite the impossibility of reunion, instills a desire for their reconciliation. McFarlane injects heart and soul into the story, and Fernandez’s artwork skillfully captures the emotional nuances between the characters.

What didn’t we like about KING SPAWN #30? Unfortunately, it’s out of order within the Heaven and Hell event’s sequence. Coordinating a discrete number of titles with the same writer should be more straightforward. Additionally, the issue focuses heavily on the farewell between Al and Wanda, which, while touching, has been explored in previous installments. The issue contributes minimally to the overarching Heaven and Hell War.

Regarding the art, Javi Fernandez’s work is commendable. McFarlane’s discernment in choosing artists who can authentically depict Spawn is evident. Fernandez’s portrayal of facial expressions, especially Al’s human form without disfigurement, adds a visually appealing dimension to the story.

KING SPAWN #30 provides closure to the Al and Wanda relationship but doesn’t significantly impact the larger Heaven and Hell War narrative. While emotionally resonant and artistically well-executed, the plot’s contribution is modest.

Score: 7.5/10
