Is KING SPAWN #28 Good?
It’s probably fair to say that any day in Hell is a tough day. Todd McFarlane puts that assumption to the test in KING SPAWN #28 when Al Simmons faces off against demons in all shapes and sizes in his long walk to reach Hell’s Throne.
When last we left Spawn, he fell down the proverbial rabbit hole of a Dead Zone to reach Hell so he could get to the Throne before Sinn, Clown, or anyone else vying for the power. Now, Spawn fights his way through Field Lords, Demonic Generals, Cleansing Bushes, and more to get where he’s going.
If you’re wondering about the plot, stakes, or big ideas, there aren’t any. This issue is all about emphasizing Spawn’s relentless determination to get where he’s going. There’s no traditional beginning, middle, or end.
What’s great about KING SPAWN #28? If you read the assortment of Spawn comics to see Al Simmons present as a 100% badass of the highest order, you got it. Only Spawn could take on a mission to walk across the wastelands of Hell to make every demon, big and small, fear him.
What’s not so great about KING SPAWN #28? There is no plot. There’s a scenario where everything Spawn does looks cool, but in effect, this issue is a series of fights strung together in a straight line. If we’re being generous, this is a transition issue, and it adds nothing to Spawn’s goals.
How’s the art? Sumptuous. Regardless of the content, McFarlane knows how to pick the best artists to make Spawn look as good as humanly possible. Every panel is a work of art, and Fernandez deserves most of the credit for elevating this issue to the score it receives.

Check out our KING SPAWN #27 review to find out who Spawn first encountered when he landed in Hell.
We begin with Spawn dragging the massive corpse of a Field Lord with chains across Hell. Before it died, the Field Lord warned Spawn about the horrors he would face in his path.
Spawn encounters a cleansing bush that feeds on his necroplasm until it drinks its fill. Then, he faces a demon general who doesn’t realize Spawn is part vampire. Finally, Spawn meets the Giant Shadow. We conclude the issue with walking on blades, trails of blood, and feeding time.

Final Thoughts

KING SPAWN #28 isn’t a story so much as it’s a string of challenges Spawn must face in his trek through Hell. The challenges are dramatic, and Fernandez’s art is fantastic, but this issue is, at best, nothing more than an excuse to make the trip from A to B look interesting.
