Is KING SPAWN #26 Good?
Todd McFarlane’s latest entry in the escalating war between Heaven and Hell finds Spawn soliciting help from a being called the Visage to help him eat Cogliostro to Hell’s Throne. McFarlane keeps Spawn squarely centered on doing what Spawn does best – tearing apart every lowlife who gets in his way – but some readers may be confused with the timing.
When last we left Spawn, he turned down an offer from Clown to join forces to stop Cogliostro from taking Hell’s Throne. Clown believed his victory and claim on the throne would be the lesser of two evils, but Spawn wouldn’t bite and walked away. Now, Spawn seeks out the Visage for help getting into Hell to cut off Cogliostro’s path.
Some readers may find the timing weird because, in the main Spawn book, he’s already in Hell, fighting with his Spawn recruits to join Cataclysm’s forces against Sinn, aka Cogliosotro, and Heaven’s army. How could two titles, centered on the same character, be fighting the same war with different allies in different locations? McFarlane is involved in both books, so this one’s a headscratcher.
What’s great about KING SPAWN #26? But for the conversation Spawn has after eventually reaching Visage, this issue is wall-to-wall Spawn action. It’s all about Spawn putting down evil humans, monsters, and everything in between to get what he wants, so if you’re in the mood for classic Spawn mayhem, you get it.
What’s not so great about KING SPAWN #26? Again, the conflicting titles are sure to throw readers off. Where does this Spawn fit in the timeline during the same war? It’s not clear, and McFarlane is in no hurry to clarify.
How’s the art? Javi Fernandez pulls no punches with a Spawn who’s as intimidating as ever when he rips, shreds, and tears through an assortment of sordid individuals to get what he wants. Simply standing still is an awesome sight for Spawn, so Fernandez nails the powerful aesthetic.

Check out our KING SPAWN #25 review to find out how Spawn handled Clown’s offer.
We begin with Spawn gearing up with a small arsenal of personal weaponry, looking for the one being who can get him into Hell- the Visage. Spawn busts down doors, breaks windows, busts faces, and breaks bones to get the intel on Visage’s whereabouts.
Eventually, Spawn comes face-to-face with a little old woman in the form of the Visage, and she tells him what she will and won’t do for him. We conclude the issue with a history lesson, a stance, and a portal.

KING SPAWN #26 breaks down doors and breaks bones to find the one person who can get him into Hell to stop Sinn. The issue is all about action and cool visuals, so if you want to see Spawn do what he does best, you’re in for a treat. That said, readers of the main Spawn title may get confused by the mismatch in timelines.
