Is It Good?

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. KING SPAWN #24 unleashes Spawn’s full rage against his attackers to stave off the Merrival family’s plans and put Exodus back on its heels. If you buy Spawn comics to see the mighty chained one unleash his fury on evil villains, you’re in for a treat.

When last we left Spawn, he found himself and Cyan trapped, with Tar Marrival, her father, and Behemoth on one side and overpowered, half-dead Yoko on the other. Now, the fight is on, and before it’s all done, there will be a definitive winner.

What’s great about this issue? You get more butt-whooping from Spawn than you have in the last three or four issues combined. The King has had enough Exodus nonsense, and he’s ready to take out the trash. At the risk of sounding oversimplified, that’s all this issue is – Spawn kicks butts and puts people in their place.

What’s not so great about this issue? Spawn metes out a righteous butt-whooping, and that’s it. The plot is thinner than a sheet of rice paper under a ten-ton steamroller. If you want action, you get it. If you want an actual plot with emotional beats and character development, look elsewhere. Further, this series is prone to narrating the actions within every single panel when the action should be a partner in telling the story, so you get the impression you’re reading an illustrated book instead of a comic.

How’s the art? This issue is our first exposure to Javi Fernandez’s work, and it’s pretty darn good. To be fair, Fernandez doesn’t quite capture McFarlane’s trademark magic with pencils and inks, but he comes in with a respectable second-place finish.

What’s It About?

Check out our KING SPAWN #23 review to find out how Spawn got sandwiched between a rock and a hard place.

We begin with a brief recap of the players when Spawn launches an attack against the senior Merrival to throw the players into confusion. The fight leans in Spawns’ favor when Tar Merrival sneaks up and plants an energy-draining kiss on the King.

Tar drags a weakened Spawn over to Behemoth for the finishing blow. Behemoth obliges with a punishing volley of punches. While the battle rages, Twitch and Terry sneak in to drag Cyan out of the way, giving Cyan a chance to reach out to Yoko and help her remember who she used to be.

With Cyan out of the way, Spawn uses the shadows to unleash his full power and end the fight for good. We conclude the issue with beheadings, backup plans, and a call to action.

Final Thoughts

KING SPAWN #24 does exactly what you would expect in a final battle of an arc – take out the trash with extreme prejudice. The art is solid, and readers who want Spawn action get plenty of it but don’t expect much by way of plot or character work.

Score: 7.5/10
