Is It Good?

KAIJUS & COWBOYS #0 is simple, pure, rock ’em sock ’em fun. Matthew Blair and Frankie B. Washington’s silent issue introduces readers to Hunter – a robot patrolling the wild colonies of a distant world to stop native monsters from stomping all over the colonists. If you have a soft spot for playing with action figures in the playground sandbox, imagining what it would be like to have robots and monsters duke it out, this indie project is for you.

This review will be shorter than most because it is a silent issue (no dialog or narration), and the heavy lifting to set up the background and current circumstances is achieved with a well-written, succinct preface page.

That said, Blair and Washington waste no time getting straight to the action and letting the fight develop Hunter’s character. You learn how Hunter operates, how he (it?) enures and triumphs over 50-foot-high monsters, and how he gathers intel when entering a town that’s been attacked. Washington does a remarkable job of telling you everything you need to know about the Hunter without saying a single word.

How’s the art? On the plus side, Washington’s character designs are creative, the panel compositions are solid, and Washington’s coloring choices and application are excellent. On the not-so-positive side, the panel backgrounds are weak, and there are not enough wide shots to give the Kaijus a sense of proportional scale, so the action sometimes feels small.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We begin with a preface page explaining how and why Earth became inhabitable. Subsequently, a group of scientists and engineers constructed a space ark to transport human survivors into deep space until a suitable colony planet could be found.

The ark’s computers eventually find a livable planet for humans, but the planet’s dense jungles are inhabited by massive Kaijus who don’t take kindly to visitors. Hunter, the best defense robot around, is tasked with traveling to each colony settlement to eradicate any Kaiju who might attack.

This is one of Hunter’s stories.

KAIJUS & COWBOYS #0 is an impressive silent issue that tells you everything you need to know about a robot hunter tasked with protecting human colonies from monsters. Hunter’s actions encapsulate an entire mission from start to finish, the action scenes are fun, and the barebones plot is beautifully executed.

Score: 8/10
