Analysis of JUPITER’S LEGACY: FINALE #5:
Recap:
When we last left the Utopian and his family in Jupiter’s Legacy: Finale #4, the collective efforts of three worlds came together to evacuate ahead of the aliens intent on harvesting all super-powered life planted eons ago. Every hero and villain available gathered together to fight in Arizona when they discovered that the 7-day deadline was really a 7-hour deadline, and all evacuation plans were rendered null and void. The issue ended with super beings fighting and dying in record time in the face of aliens with super-advanced weaponry and no mercy.
Plot Analysis:
In Jupiter’s Legacy: Finale #5, the series comes to an end. Super beings on Earth, whether a hero or a villain, fight desperately against alien invaders, but to no avail. The aliens have weapons that block and nullify most powers, so the supers are decimated easily. Meanwhile, the Utopian follows the aliens’ energy trail back to their homeworld, where their masters monitor the progress of the harvest.
The Utopian pleads with the alien masters to let humanity live and reach its full potential. The aliens are amused by the effort but refuse. The Utopian has no choice but to play a last hand. He uses the universal translator to issue a voice command that turns the advanced technology against their master. The result is devastating… for the aliens.
The issue ends with the Utopian ushering in a true Utopia for all life in the Universe.
First Impressions:
All hail the master of big swings that (almost) always succeed. Mark Millar brings his superhero series to a close with a twist that not only saves the world but changes history for the universe. If you were wondering at the end of the last issue, “How are they going to get out of this one?” Millar works it out in grand style.
Artwork and Presentation:
Lee Carter’s illustrations get the job done by depicting a string of one-sided action sequences that show the heroes at their lowest point before the tide turns. In fairness, comic artists who make their bones first as illustrators tend to have a stiffness or lack of fluidity in the dynamic scenes, so you definitely get that stiffness here.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
Absolutely nobody is as masterful as Mark Millar at putting the reader on a rollercoaster that brings you down to the deepest depths before rocketing you to the highest heights. A finale this big and this grand is a showstopper in the best way when the Utopian breaks his moral code for all the right reasons to save everyone.
The Negatives:
Beyond the stiff art, the Utopian’s weapon of last resort resolves the conflict almost a little too easily. The resolution makes sense and it works for the conflict at hand, but you’d think a super-advanced race of aliens would have a little more security on their most destructive weapon.
Big Picture:
Series Continuity:
Will Jupiter’s Legacy return? Is this truly the end? In the Comics Industry, there’s always a clever idea to bring a finished story back for more, but based on the way this arc ended, it’s about as final as you can get.

JUPITER’S LEGACY: FINALE #5 brings the arc and the series to a close with a last-ditch battle between Earth’s super-beings and an alien invasion. Mark Millar’s Swan Song concludes the conflict with the biggest of swings and a satisfying resolution, and the art team’s delivery is decent.
