Is It Good?
Junior #1 is an amusing science fiction story that blends equal parts action, character-building, and intriguing situations for an original start. If you like science fiction that’s just weird enough to be humorous, this comic is right up your alley.
Kmeto’s script focuses on Junior, a space soldier on the outs with her commanders sent to repair a damaged satellite when a freak accident forces her to crash on a mysterious planet. Aided by her partner, a talking, pigmy hippo named Walter, Junior is forced to survive one catastrophe after another.
The setup is clean. Through the cantankerous dialog between Junior and Walter, you can glean enough backstory to understand Junior’s nature and hints about why she’s in trouble with command. More importantly, when the action starts, it doesn’t stop until almost the last page, so the pacing is energetic, and the action comes rapid-fire.
Kmeto’s art style matches the script to a tee (as it should since Kmeto is on tap for both). The character designs are highly referenced, but not so much as to be offputting, and the sets and costumes are highly original. The minor down point is the lack of blending/feathering in the coloring, giving the characters a pixelated appearance in the close-up panels.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Junior, a recruit for the military, and Walter, a talking pigmy hippo, working on repairing a damaged communication satellite in deep space. Before they can complete their mission, a large meteor smashes the satellite to bits and damages Junior’s ship, forcing Junior and Walter to make an emergency landing on the alien planet below.
The landing is rough, and Junior is thrown from the ship. We conclude the issue with tests of archaeological theories, bad landings, and shared memories.

JUNIOR #1 is a unique take on science fiction with slightly surreal characters, settings, and situations to grab your attention and generate a little humor. The dialog is excellent, and the non-stop action keeps you on your toes.
