Analysis of JONNY QUEST #5:
First Impressions:
If you open Allen’s Dictionary of English Phrase and look up the definition of “rock solid,” you’ll eventually find a cover of Dynamite’s Jonny Quest series. Writer Joe Casey ends the first arc (more on the future below) with action, high adventure, intrigue, drama, and a few teases at the end to make every page worth its weight in gold. Jonny Quest #5 caps the first arc with everything you want AND need in a finale.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left Jonny and his adventurous allies in Jonny Quest #4, Dr. Quest, Race, and Old Man Jonny intercepted Dr. Zin’s flying fortress to stage a daring rescue. Meanwhile, Jonny and Hadji join forces with Jasmine to escape their cell and create as much havoc as possible. The issue ended with a deadly standoff in the flying fortress’s control room.
In Jonny Quest #5, the battle continues on multiple fronts.
Jonny Quest and Old Man Jonny Quest fight Dr. Zin’s robotic stormtroopers in the command center of the flying fortress while the holographic Dr. Zin quotes Sun Tzu’s The Art Of War to crow about his superiority. Elsewhere, Race and Hadji find Dr. Quest after his hard-fought battle against a robotic soldier.
Joe Casey begins the finale with all battles in progress with high energy and urgency. It’s a fair bet Jonny will survive, but there are enough temporary characters like Old Man Jonny to worry that survivability isn’t certain.
When the Jonnys near victory over Dr. Zin’s robots, a wayward comment leads our heroes to the truth. Dr. Zin hired Jasmine to steal the components because the villain somehow acquired his own Quantum Counter and intends to use it to dominate multiple eras in time. The Jonnys use a quantum tracker and find a hidden room near the heart of the fortress where a duplicate of the Quantum Counter is stored. When Zin sends his robots to apprehend the Jonnys, Zin’s copy of the Quantum Counter is destroyed in the firefight.
If Joe Casey’s time twist seems confusing, it gets a proper explanation before the issue ends. Still, a tense situation escalates exponentially when we learn Zin may have the means and parts to create his own time-travel capabilities, which hikes up the urgency to stop the villain.
The issue concludes with Old Man Jonny’s navigation skills forcing the arrival of a welcoming party, Dr. Zin “living” to fight another day, a big question forming in Race’s mind, and young Jonny learning the same lesson as Sarah Conner.
Overall, Jonny Quest #5 ends the first arc with thrills, excitement, clever twists, and the promise of more. Joe Casey nailed every narrative aspect that made the original cartoon so memorable for a wholly satisfying story.
Artwork and Presentation:
Sebastián Piriz and Lorenzo Scaramaell bring their A-Game to the finale by sending our heroes through a maze of obstacles to save the day. Piriz uses off-angle panels and interesting camera viewpoints to infuse every sprint, punch, and kick with pop, and Scaramella’s coloring decisions are perfect.

The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
If you’ve loved this series as much as we have, you may wonder why there’s no solicitation for issue #6 in January. Fret not. The series is taking a brief hiatus, and according to the last page of this issue, the series will return in March 2025.
