Analysis of JONNY QUEST #4:
First Impressions:
Let’s not bury the lede. Jonny Quest #4 is pretty good and entirely on-brand for the miniseries as a whole. Writer Joe Casey maintains the high bar of spirit and adventure that made the original series memorable while adding pinches of drama and mystery to keep the story fresh. All penultimate issues should hit their mark as well.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left Jonny and his friends in Jonny Quest #3, their quest (*ahem*) to reproduce the parts for Dr. Quest’s quantum counter went awry when the parts were stolen by a thief with a familiar parentage. Jonny and Hadji eventually caught up to the thief, Jasmine, but their chase led them straight into the hands of Dr. Zin.
In Jonny Quest #4, Old Man Jonny recklessly decides to undergo a dangerous procedure to have a Fukunaga scanner read his bio-signature at a dangerous speed. If the procedure works, Fukunaga scanners will use satellite telemetry to find young Jonny anywhere on the planet, but the unsafe speed of the procedure could cause permanent damage to his body.
Joe Casey leaps into the gripping drama from the first page with a manufactured scenario that fits the situation and reads as plausible. What better way to use the most advanced tech on the planet than to sacrifice your older body to find your younger self? Unfortunately, the procedure does come off as oddly dangerous when a simple blood test should do the trick, but we’ll go with it.
Elsewhere, Jonny and Hadji get to know their cellmate, Jasmine, who grows increasingly confused about how a pair of young boys are so familiar with her grandmother. Jonny decides to take charge of getting them out of Dr. Zin’s cell, so they strike a truce with Jasmine to escape the next time guards enter their cell.
The conversation between Jasmine and the boys ranges from amusing to slightly frustrating. We’ve often seen time travel scenarios before where someone from the future can’t divulge details to people of the past for fear of altering the timeline, but there should be no worry in reverse. Casey plants a seed of anticipation for how Jasmine will react when (if?) she finds out.
When the Fukunaga satellites pinpoint Jonny’s location, Race, Dr. Quest, and Old Man Jonny set out in the Dragonfly at top speed to intercept Dr. Zin’s flying fortress. When their airships come into visual contact, Dr. Zin launches a swarm of armed drones to destroy the Dragonfly. What follows is a sequence of aerial wow movements, a crash landing that leads to opportunities for the adults and boys, and a deadly standoff as a cliffhanger.
Overall, Jonny Quest #4 is another winning issue that ends in a strong cliffhanger heading into the finale of the first arc. If the finale hits as hard as the rest of the series, Dynamite should consider more adventures in the future.
Artwork and Presentation:
As a whole, the artwork from Sebastián Piriz and Lorenzo Scaramella is very good. That said, something in the digital copy we received for the review is off in the coloring. The application of colors looks smudged or loosely applied, especially in panels where colors should have sharp edges and clean lines.

JONNY QUEST #4 is an excellent penultimate issue that sets up Jonny and his friends for a ripping showdown in the finale next month. Joe Casey’s script nails all the voices of the characters to match the source material, and the artistic choices from Sebastián Piriz are on point.
