JIMMY’S VENDETTA PT. 1 – Advance Review

Posted on May 11, 2021

In this early look at JIMMY’S VENDETTA PT. 1, available soon on Kickstarter from Blue Fox Comics, a post-apocalyptic Earth of the future is run by the Greek gods who rule their territories as mobsters and crime bosses. When a demi-god hitman is mysteriously resurrected after being murdered, not even the gods are safe from his wrath.

Was It Good?

The concept is inventive and original. The pacing is impossibly quick for a graphic novel this size. And the art is generally good. Overall, this is an excellent graphic novel if you’re open to a mix of alt-Greek mythology and gangster noir couched in a revenge story (Try saying that five times fast).

To be fair, the art could use a little spit and polish in a few spots, and the dialog sounded clunky in a few panels, but nothing a little tweaking can’t fix before the campaign closes.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

In the world of 2189, where the bright lights and casinos rule what’s left of civilization, the Titans and Olympian gods ruthlessly control their territories with a robotic fist made of iron.

Jimmy’s a demi-god, a hitman, and a dead man. He doesn’t know why he’s back from the dead, looking like a rotting corpse left out in the desert sun for 3 weeks, but he knows who killed him and where to find him.

Don Kronos runs the Mount Olympus Hotel & Casino as the greatest of Titans and the most ruthless mob boss on the planet. When one of Kronos’s top men, Vinny, is discovered murdered along with his crew, Don Kronos sends out his men to find out what happened.

What Don Kronos doesn’t know is Vinny is Jimmy’s killer, and Jimmy is none too happy about it now that he’s back from the dead. What follows is wall-to-wall action rivaling any John Wick film as Jimmy kicks, slashes, shoots, and bludgeons everyone who’s responsible for his death.

The next stop on Jimmy’s resurrection tour? Club Hades and a 1 am meeting with Don Kronos that’s sure to be unprofessional.

If it seems like this review is short for a 50+ page graphic novel, you’d be right for a few reasons. The pacing is incredibly quick as there’s a LOT of action. The exposition and dialog are compact and laser-accurate. And admittedly, the story doesn’t quite encapsulate a clear beginning, middle, and end. There’s a definite reliance on the fact that backers will pick up subsequent issues to understand what came before and what happens next. That may or may not leave you satisfied.

How Does It End?

Club Hades has some rough bouncers. Not everyone thinks Jimmy’s one ugly dude. “Next Stop, Mount Olympus.”

Final Thoughts

JIMMY’S VENDETTA PT. 1, available soon on Kickstarter from Blue Fox Comics, takes the Las Vegas gangster genre and flips it on its head with a unique fusion of Greek gods and cyberpunk aesthetic. If the following issues can keep the pace and the imaginative concept going, this will be a series to watch.

Score: 8/10
