Was It Good?
It was FREAKY! Giallo film, plot twist freaky.
Hats off to Van Lente for throwing in a big identity reveal for Jennifer Blood and plot twist ending you won’t see coming from a mile away. This is the type of storytelling that makes this series worth every penny, and if you’re a fan of grindhouse killer madness, this one’s for you.
The ending is too good to spoil, but if you want more details leading up to the explosive ending, read on through to the next section.
This issue is absurd, AND it works. It works because it IS absurd and it takes itself seriously at the same time. That’s the key not enough comics creators have gotten a handle on when they definitely should. You can get wild. You can get crazy. You can go way, way, way over-the-top, and it will still work if you follow a couple of edicts. First, it has to fit within the context of the story and the nature of the characters. Second, the story and everyone in it have to go all-in with 100% commitment. Half measures don’t work when you’re going gonzo with story elements and Van Lente goes all in.
Of course, you can’t go all-in with grindhouse galore if you don’t have wild action and violence, and Federici is happy to oblige. The maiming and deaths are brutal. The slickly styled panel compositions make every scene hip/cool. And Eckleberry’s lettering captures every bone crack and gunshot perfectly.
This issue appears to be the end of the current arc, and if so, the creators couldn’t have ended the story in a better fashion.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Giulietta believes she’s uncovered Jennifer Blood’s real identity. Find out how that happened in our JENNIFER BLOOD (VOL. 2) #4 review.
We begin with Giulietta and meeting with the town council to relay what she discovered about Jennifer Blood’s real identity. The council is on board with tracking Blood down, but the Don has some concerns after footage was sent to him showing Giulietta was behind some of the recent killings. The videos show a woman with blond hair, which means it could be a setup, but the Don is buying. He moves to have Giulietta taken until he can figure out if she is or isn’t sent by a rival crime family to ruin his protection racket.
Not one to take a bad rap lying down, Giulietta decides to murder her way out of the council, starting with a groin kick that will hurt in ways you can’t imagine (hint: it’s in the preview images below). She makes her way to the brothel where she believes Blood is hiding in plain sight. When she gets there, she learns she was right but also wrong in a bizarre twist.
We conclude the issue with a gunfight, an FBI raid, a sewer chase, and the last day for Bountiful.

Final Thoughts
JENNIFER BLOOD (VOL. 2) #5 ends the current arc on a high note with plenty of action, twists, turns, and a jaw-dropping reveal about the title character. Van Lente went all in on going wild and crazy, but tit completely works. And Federici’s art captures every blood moment in hip detail.
