Is It Good?
JAZZ: JUGGERNAUTS AGAINST ZEALOUS ZEALOTS (VOL. 0) is a near-perfect example of a Manga-inspired Western comic, giving readers an eclectic group of heroes, powerful monsters, cyberpunk-influenced settings, and a dark conspiracy to generate curiosity and intrigue.
Christopher Curtis’s script centers on JAZZ, a so-called rebel group of superpowered and tech-powered individuals who protect the city of Neo Haven against monster incursions from otherworldly portals. When JAZZ arrives to defeat the latest monster, their efforts draw ire from the police and a shadowy group intent on making use of the monsters for their own purposes.
What’s great about his issue? If you’re a fan of Minag comics, there’s a lot to like about this first volume. Curtis’s characters have unique capabilities and personalities to match. The members of JAZZ have just enough relationship friction to keep their teamwork interesting. And the monster invasion setup is well-constructed for fans of existing properties such as Pacific Rim.
What’s not so great about this issue? Honestly, nothing significant. Curtis sets up the characters with perfect introductions. The monster conflict, while not thoroughly explained, is given enough details to make the situation clear, with the expectation that more information is coming. And the secondary plot of a conspiracy is intriguing.
How’s the art? Monocrum-Edge’s style hits the nail on the head for comic fans who love Mangaka art. This volume looks like it fits comfortably within VIZ’s lineup of titles.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a brief introduction to Neo Haven, a futuristic city under the constant threat of monster invasions that suddenly appear via randomly-appearing portals. The police insist on maintaining control and order, but the latest monster, a giant three-headed dog, is more than they can handle. When they’re needed most, JAZZ arrives to put the dog down.
The police order JAZZ to stand down and obey orders, but it’s clear the police are clearly not in control of the situation. JAZZ stops the dog, and their leader, Nova, absorbs the dog into her power ring as a potential weapon in the future.
We conclude the issue with threats, insults, and a secret plan in motion.
