Analysis of INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #3:

First Impressions:

This issue feels like a punch to the face—brutal, relentless, and a little bit exhilarating. The creative team is clearly having fun, and so will you, even if you’re left picking bits of alien sinew out of your teeth.

Recap:

Missed the previous chapter? In Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #2, Battle Beast tore through the Blood Games, left a trail of bodies, and found himself the target of galactic authorities, all while his ship’s AI plotted his demise and Prince Salaka got a shiny new cyborg makeover.

Plot Analysis:

The issue opens with Battle Beast and Prince Salaka trapped in the tractor beam of the Twin Galaxies’ enforcers, who are none too pleased with our hero’s bloody reputation. The ship’s AI, ever the frenemy, reveals it tipped off the authorities, hoping to finally rid itself of its unwanted passenger. Battle Beast, predictably, is more annoyed than intimidated.

As the Twin Galaxies’ commander demands surrender, Battle Beast responds the only way he knows how: with violence. What follows is a spectacular display of mayhem as he carves his way through armored soldiers, with Salaka reluctantly lending a hand. The battle is a showcase for Ryan Ottley’s kinetic art, full of flying limbs and snarky banter.

In the chaos, Salaka’s new enhancements are put to the test, and he proves he’s more than just comic relief. Meanwhile, the AI’s schemes backfire, leaving it stuck with Battle Beast for another round. The aftermath sees our antihero battered but unbowed, as he and his unlikely crew escape the wreckage with a new plan, thanks to the scheming of Salaka and the AI. Salaka was trapped for a millennia by the Juggernaut of his world, so it makes sense that the Juggernaut will give Battle Beast the challenge he needs.

The final pages take Battle Beast and his crew back to Salaka’s world of Fantania, but it appears much has changed since the last time Salaka was home.

Story

Robert Kirkman’s script is sharp, balancing over-the-top violence with sardonic humor. Dialogue crackles, especially between Battle Beast and the ship’s AI, whose mutual hatred is the book’s secret weapon. The story moves fast, never letting up on action, but sometimes sacrifices emotional depth for spectacle.

Art

Ryan Ottley’s art is a blood-soaked symphony—dynamic, expressive, and gloriously grotesque. Every page bursts with energy, from the wild alien designs to the inventive carnage. Annalisa Leoni’s colors pop, making even the goriest panels look weirdly beautiful. The layouts are cinematic, but sometimes the sheer chaos can make the action hard to follow

Characters

Battle Beast is still a one-note juggernaut, but it’s a note played at maximum volume. Prince Salaka gets some much-needed development, evolving from punchline to partner. The AI remains a highlight, its dry contempt for Battle Beast providing comic relief. Supporting cast is thin, but the focus is squarely on the main trio’s dysfunctional dynamic.

Positives

The action is relentless and creative, with Ottley’s art delivering jaw-dropping moments on nearly every page. Kirkman’s script is packed with quips and callbacks, keeping things lively even when the body count climbs. The comic doesn’t take itself too seriously, embracing its own absurdity and inviting readers to do the same.

Negatives

The story’s breakneck pace leaves little room for nuance or character growth, and the violence can feel repetitive after a while. Some panels are so busy they border on incoherent, and new readers may feel lost without prior knowledge of the Invincible universe. The letters page, while fun, is mostly inside baseball for hardcore fans.

INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #3 is a riotous, blood-soaked romp that delivers exactly what it promises—big fights, big laughs, and bigger messes. It’s not deep, but it’s never dull, and the creative team’s enthusiasm is infectious. If you want subtlety, complexity, or depth, look elsewhere. If you want to see a space lion punch a hole through a spaceship, you’ve come to the right place

Score: 7.5/10
