Was It Good?
The quick critique is “it’s not bad”.
THE INVINCIBLE RED SONJA #7 comes after what was supposed to be the end of a limited series by Palmiotti and Conner. Since the original run’s announcement, Dynamite decided to pick the series up as an ongoing rather than let the mini end based on the original pitch. This issue reads like a story in transition from one major conflict to the next, and in all honesty, does it better than most.
The keyword here is “transition”. There are no major villains to emerge from the ashes of Brelaq’s volcanic ending. There are no time jumps that abruptly announce the series picks up “six months later”. The story continues with a little bit of struggle, more than a little self-reflection by the surviving characters, and enough information dropped to indicate the group has a direction.
The thing that’s missing is a meatier conflict than what happens in this issue. You can read up on the details in the next section if you don’t mind spoilers, but the generic description is that Red Sonja and Tuma are separated from the royal couple, resulting in an encounter with unsavory characters. Is it enough to get you excited for what happens next? Again, it’s not bad but “excitement” is overstating things, mostly because the villains encountered should pose no challenge for the Crimson-Haired Shed-Devil.
Regarding the art. We’ve made some bones about Moritat’s art coming off as rushed and unfinished in previous issues. Thankfully, the art quality in this issue is consistent and closer to the level of finish and polish to what we saw in issue #1. The lack of character details in wide panels is still there and still noticeable, but if you can accept the style for what it is, the book looks as good as it did in the first issue.

What’s It About?

If you’re not sure how Red Sonja “died” after Brelaq’s final spell, check out our THE INVINCIBLE RED SONJA #6 review.
We begin with Red Sonja and Scathach, Red Sonja’s patron god, in a chess match to decide Sonja’s fate. As the match and the conversation heats up, it’s clear Red Sonja is being tested to prove her worthiness. A test she passes.
Elsewhere, Prince Ederick, Princess Zaria, and Tuma watch Brelaq’s volcano consume all the surrounding lands and the very spot where Red Sonja was last seen. Tuma flys off on the slimmest hope he may find Red Sonja alive, while Ederick and Zaria wait and discuss their future. Prince Ederick’s kingdom is gone, so their hope lies in heading to a harbor town to set sail from Princess Zaria’s kingdom to be married.
Red Sonja awakes inside the encrusted lava in intense pain but alive. Brelaq’s healing spell hasn’t worn off yet, and she’s able to survive and break free just as Tuma spots her from the air. We conclude the issue with Tuma and Red Sonja finding rest, food, and a mid-sized dinosaur to fight, Ederick and Zaria heading off on their own before finding out they’re not safe or alone, and a grotesque encounter for all characters with some bizarre mutants.
Final Thoughts
THE INVINCIBLE RED SONJA #7 transitions from the finale of the originally-intended arc to an ongoing series with a story that lightly sets up the new status quo and direction for all the survivors of Brelaq’s madness. The art is back up to the standards set in issue #1, and the transition from one arc to the next works well enough, but this is a soft issue that doesn’t do much to grab your attention.
