Was It Good?

Yes, it was pretty good.

There’s quite a lot of material in this graphic novel to be completed by a single person, so on that count alone, this is a commendable book. The story is reminiscent of Suspiria (1977) but with a lean more towards sorcery and magic rather than witchcraft

The art quality is fairly good for a solo project. The lines are clean and the characters are expressive. The two areas that need a little improvement are the coloring and the character anatomy.

The color tended to bleed over lines, which created a smudgy look. The characters, depending on the panel, appeared to have abnormally large heads, almost as if you were viewing the panel through a fisheye lens.

Overall, this is a well-written and well-drawn book.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

Cassandra Rossi is a prima ballerina training to give the command performance of her career. Her aunt, Emilia, is a famed ballerina in her own right who’s retired to a life of training Cassandra for the big stage. Besides their mutual prowess in dance, they both possess magical powers.

As the time for Cassandra’s big performance approaches, Emilia is secretly grooming her to be the conduit that will free a dark force from an interdimensional prison. Emilia loves her niece but she must complete the training as payment for a pact made long ago.

The dark forces have grown impatient with Cassandra’s training and decide to test her abilities by creating a disaster during the big performance. Cassandra survives the test but a coven, with pacts of their own, tries to kill Cassandra after she’s taken to the hospital.

Emilia uses her magic to protect Cassandra from a demon created by the coven, but the demon overpowers her. Cassandra, unsure of what’s happening, is forced to decide to use her own powers to help her aunt or run away.

How Does It End?

A possessed police officer takes a fall. One of the coven has second thoughts. “Here I Am.”

Final Thoughts

INCANTESI #1, available for backing now on IndieGoGo, is an interesting tale of dark magic and the tenuous bonds of family. The scope and quality of the book is commendable for being a solo project, and it’s worth a look.

Score: 7.5/10
