Was It Good?
IMPOSSIBLE JONES #4 is a near-perfect bookend to an amusingly odd little duckling of a series from Scout Comics. If you’re new to the title, the central premise surrounds a thief who accidentally acquires fantastical powers during a heist-gone-wrong, so the setup is unique in that the hero is actually a villain. A villain who sometimes does the right thing but is still a villain.
Issue #4 concludes the character’s first arc with a knuckle-busting brawl that highlights the main character’s resiliency in body and mind against a brute force opponent. The big question remaining is how well does the arc end? Well, it doesn’t end as much as it takes a timeout. Kesel sets the stage to continue the story in a future arc (no timing has been announced for more as of this writing), which works for and against this finale.
Leaving so many open-ended (Is Jimmy alive? Where did end up after falling through the portal? What’s Mr. Monster up to? Will Mr. Monster retaliate?) questions works for the finale by building up a heavy dose of curiosity to encourage readers to come back for more. However, too many open questions can lead to frustration and leave readers feeling like the arc is unfinished. For us, this issue stops just short of satisfying.
Regardless of how well the arc is finished, the art in this issue is super satisfying. Hahn and Aviña completed the issue with a Silver-Age-inspired brawl for the ages. The action is powerful, the colors are bold, and the entire battle is pure, classic, imaginative superhero fun.

What’s It About?

If you’re not sure how Jones wound up in the clutches of Homewrecker, first read our IMPOSSIBLE JONES #3 review.
We begin with Impossible Jones getting her first taste of hero notoriety with a little help from Pole Cat and Capt. Lightning. With some words of encouragement and caution, Jones sneaks away from the Press to find Jimmy. Their apartment, she soon finds, has been demolished and Jimmy is missing. However, Fosca is there and they figure out Jimmy was taken by Homewrecker on behalf of Mr. Monster.
Later, Mr. Monster shows up at his gym where Homewrecker has Jimmy chained up. He wants the device he paid to have stolen, but the device is now a permanent part of Jimmy’s arm. The situation is quickly remedied as Mr. Monster orders the device be brought to him, even if it means taking Jimmy’s arm off.
Suddenly, Impossible Jones arrives to save the day… or does she? We conclude the issue with an epic battle, disappearances, a guest hero cameo, and a flash-forward.

Final Thoughts
IMPOSSIBLE JONES #4 completes the arc reasonably well, however, the numerous dangling threads hold the finale back from being truly satisfying. That said, the art is truly great and fulfills that nostalgic itch for classic superhero battles from the Silver Age of comics.
