Was It Good?

Nearly everything about IMPOSSIBLE JONES #3 works as an origin story for a new superhero who secretly isn’t a hero. The story is solid, the art evokes a Silver Age sense of nostalgia, and the twist and turns are clever enough to get you to want to know more about what happens to Jones next.

We’ve liked the premise since the beginning. What happens when a crook gains superpowers and presents themselves as a superhero when a little bit of the crook remains? It’s an interesting twist on the classic superhero origin story, and it leaves room for plenty of unpredictability when you don’t know which side Jones will take in any given situation.

In this issue, we see how Jones is introduced to the world when her search for her would-be killer turns into a super-powered fight in public. Jones is crafty enough to spin the situation to gain favor from the press and other superheroes when they arrive on the scene. Jones is a survivor and it makes for neat storytelling when you wonder how she’ll get out of sticky situations.

That said, the down point of the issue is the corny-beyond-corny dialog. The characters, both heroes and villains talk like bad movie serials of the 1930s, and while that appears to be intentional, it’s excessive in this issue. In short, the dialog is painfully corny.

The high point of the issue is the art by Kesel, Hahn, and Aviña. Again, the intent seems to be to mimic classic Golden- and Silver-Age comics look and feel, and on that count, the artists nail it. The colors are bold, the superhero shenanigans are a pleasant mix of silly and cool, and the action holds your attention.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

If you don’t recall how Jones got into a standoff against the Saint of Knives, first read our IMPOSSIBLE JONES #2 review.

We begin with a flashback to an alleyway confrontation between Even Steven and Bloodblade. Steven ultimately wins, but not before he receives a fatal knife wound. A wound he miraculously recovers from the next day.

Now, Impossible Jones is fighting for her life against the former Bloodblade, now called Saint of Knives. As the knives fly, Jones learns more about her abilities to change shape, heal, and even grow additional limbs.

The battle spills out onto the street below in front of a crowd of people. When Jones is pinned to assign by the Saints knives, Polecat and Captain Lightning arrive to lend a hand. Polecat quickly decides Jones is a hero but Lightning is not convinced.

We conclude the issue with advice about the press, Jimmy practicing his portal powers, and the arrival of more muscle working for Gila Monster.

Final Thoughts

IMPOSSIBLE JONES #3 leverages plenty of classic Silver Age storytelling and art to recount how Impossible Jones became a hero to the public. The plotting, pacing, and creative use of superpowers are entertaining, but the dialog is over-the-top corny.
