Is It Good?
IMMORTAL RED SONJA #7 picks up the pace and the action to deliver a comic that makes big progress on Red Sonja’s quest to be free of her cursed armor and throws in a (predictable) twist for good measure. Despite the predictability of the twist, this is possibly the best issue of the series.
Abnett’s story focuses on Red Sonja’s entrapment in the Feasting Hall, chased by a pack of very hungry Merlyn’s. The issue is equal parts action, exposition, and revelation, so you get plenty of meat for the cover price.
Abnett’s unique blend of Arthurian legendry and Red Sonja canon is seamless. Sir Lanzlot, the Green Knight, Merlyn, and heaps of curses are a treat for medieval Sword & Sorcery epic fans, but Abnett’s intricate mingling of Red Sonja’s brand of action/adventure almost creates a new genre unto itself.
However, when Red Sonja endures her trial, there’s a twist that’s most remarkable for its utter predictability. The twist doesn’t diminish the issue’s fun factor, but a good twist should come as a surprise, and there wasn’t much of a surprise in this one.
Colandrea’s art is solid enough, especially with the task of rendering a giant, beating heart in chains. The creatures are imaginative, and the action is well-choreographed, but Colandrea’s trouble with drawing noses is hard to miss. Normally, critiquing nose art would seem like an odd choice, but there are too many close-up panels in this issue to miss it.

Check out our IMMORTAL RED SONJA #6 review to find out how Red Sonja became trapped in the Feasting Hall.
We begin with Red Sonja running for her life from a pack of Merlyn’s inside the walking Feasting Hall. After a few issues of quiet, the chainmail decides to start speaking again to enlighten Red Sonja on her current plight and what to do to get out of it.
The pack of Merlyns is THE Merlyn, split into shards by a curse to weaken him against escape from the Feasting Hall. Break the Feasting Hall’s curse, and Merlyn will be restored to free the curse on Red Sonja’s chainmail. Meanwhile, Lanzlot battles the Green Knight outside while trying to talk the knight into a truce.
We conclude the issue with a broken heart, restoration, and lies.

IMMORTAL RED SONJA #7 is a fun, fast-paced, energetic issue with plenty of movement on the plot and big reveals. However, the biggest reveal is somewhat predictable, and the art is just above-average.
