Is It Good?
IMMORTAL RED SONJA #6 is a fine issue in a fine series that feels like it’s either too decompressed to keep readers engaged or is just treading water to fill out the requisite number of issues. Only minor plot movement takes place, and while the events are somewhat exciting, the arc doesn’t feel like it has a meaningful, clear direction. In isolation, this issue is fine. In the context of the broader arc, this issue feels like filler.
The high point is Abnett’s imaginative merging of Red Sonja mythology with the Arthurian legend for a new adventure that doesn’t feel like either yet respects both. Readers get namedrops and Easter Eggs aplenty with appearances of and references to the Green Knight, Sir
Garwayn, Merlyn, Lord Agravan, and Osric. More than any previous issue, Abnett beautifully meshes King Arthur’s mythology into an adventure that suits Red Sonja’s style of adventure.
The down point is the lack of plot development and its subsequent drag on the arc’s pacing. If you peel back the layers on the issue, the only progress the story makes is giving Lanzlot armor. To be fair, there are plenty of dangers to fight and overcome, but very little forward in the main plot takes place. The litmus test for such an issue would be to ask yourself, “If I skipped this issue, do I miss anything?” Depending on what happens in the next issue, it would be easy to conclude “no.”
Colandrea’s art is serviceable in this issue. The monster designs are entertaining, and the action is well-choreographed. However, Colandrea has a persistent problem with character nose design, and Wright’s color palette selection is drab.

What’s It About?

Check out our IMMORTAL RED SONJA #5 review to find out how Lanzlot was brought to his senses.
We begin with Red Sonja waiting outside the entrance to a tomb. Lanzlot believes he can enter the tomb to retrieve the armor and weapons as he was the one who beat the tomb’s “resident” in fair combat, and therefore, is the rightful owner of the tomb’s contents. Lanzlot’s confidence in claiming what’s his without molestation is misplaced.
Red Sonja charges in to help Lanzlot as the dead rise, and the two narrowly escape death. Later, an armed and armored Lanzlot guides Red Sonja to the Festing Hall of Lord Agravan, a favorite feating spot for Merlyn years ago. Before the two can enter the Hall, the Green Knight arrives to cut them down.
Lanzlot begs Red Sonja to enter the Hall to look for help while he holds the Green Knight off. We conclude the issue with Merlyn(s), a recognition of the Green Knight’s identity, and a Feasting Hall that feasts.

Final Thoughts

IMMORTAL RED SONJA #6 is a serviceable issue with plenty of cool visuals and lots of Easter Eggs for lovers of Arthurian legend. However, the plot barely moves forward, and the mediocre art makes this issue largely forgettable.

Is Red Sonja a MJ?
No. There are a few examples of crossover titles between Marvel and Dynamite where Spider-Man teamed up with Red Sonja, but MJ aka Mary Jane Watson is not Red Sonja.
