Was It Good?
IMMORTAL RED SONJA #3 keeps the energy and pacing high while keeping the amusement factor even higher. This series has turned into the unlikeliest of buddy cop stories you can imagine, and Abnett’s writing delivers with finesse and no small amount of snark.
The high point in this issue is the sometimes witty, sometimes maddening banter between Red Sonja and the spirit trapped within her cursed armor. The armor has insight into their current quest but is either forgetful of small but critical details or pretends to know more than it lets on. The armor’s gaps in information continually land Red Sonja in sticky situations, forcing her way to fight her way out, cursing the armor all the while.
The down point is a jarring transition in art styles around the halfway point. Red Sonja is fighting a very large Magog when the scene shifts and the Magog looks completely different from one page to the next. Little inconsistencies in line styles are one thing, but changing the entire appearance of a foe in mid-battle is offputting. The transition comes off as a breakdown in communication during the artist handoff, and that’s unacceptable for a $3.99 cover price.
Despite the harsh transition, the art is generally good. Panel layouts are excellent, panel compositions are dynamic, and the action feels big when it should considering Red Sonja is fighting off a series of gigantic beasts.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
To get the lowdown on the Chatty Kathy trapped in chainmail, first read our IMMORTAL RED SONJA #2 review.
We begin with Red Sonja hiking her way up a mountain trail towards Merlyn’s tower. She encounters an assortment of giants, ogres, and trolls eager to block her path, but her greatest annoyance comes from the never-silent armor that fails to alert her to the dangers ahead. Red Sonja dispatches the beasts, and the armor enlightens her about the nature of curses and how a curse can be a benefit when used properly.
Red Sonja arrives at the doorway, only to be confronted by a giant Magog hungry for a meal. Despite its size, the Magog is too strong and too quick to defeat easily. suddenly, a second Magog arrives, but instead of partnering with the first, it attacks the first, giving Red Sonja time to enter the tower.
Inside the tower, Rd Sonaj learns Merlyn’s fate and the whereabouts of all his magical wares. We conclude the issue with a revelation, a new path, and more giant monsters.

Final Thoughts

IMMORTAL RED SONJA #3 is an action-packed issue with amusing banter, movement on the plot, and interesting life lessons about the benefits of curses. However, the artist handoff at the halfway point is jarringly obvious to the point of feeling like you’re reading two different comics.
