Was It Good?
IMMORTAL RED SONJA #2 reminds you exactly why Dan Abnett is one of the best writers in Dynamite’s stable of creators. We loved issue #1’s take on the Red Sonja legend mashed up with the history of Brittania and King Arthur. Now, the legendary mashup continues with more mythical cameos, snappy dialog, and quests rivaling Beowulf’s.
However, be warned. The tone and timbre of this issue are a little lighter than what readers got in issue #1. There’s a fair bit of humor by way of Red Sonja’s constant bickering with the soul trapped in her armor. And the threats Red Sonja faces don’t appear to pose much of a threat once she rolls up her sleeves to get to work. Issue #2 isn’t jokey or silly. It’s lighthearted with a little bit of seriousness.
That said, the issue is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. The bickering between Red Sonja and her armor is amusing, and the threats Red Sonja vanquishes sometimes make things worse, creating a comedy of errors. Easter Eggs of legendry are fun, and Red Sonja certainly faces danger, but this issue steers clear of grim, gritty adventure.
The art by Pinna and Colandrea is serviceable in this issue. There are two down points with the art. They’re minor points, but they’re a constant distraction. First, the artists have a consistency problem with Red Sonja’s face, particularly around the eyebrows, and hair. Between successive scenes, she almost looks like a different character. The second down point is the soft, muted color palette selection. In some scenes, big scenes where pop is needed, the colors look faded and washed out. Again, these are small points but noticeable points.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
If you don’t recall how or why Red Sonja started this quest, first read our IMMORTAL RED SONJA #1 review.
We begin with Red Sonja venturing further into Logres in a bid to find Merlyn’s tower. According to the soul trapped in her armor, Merlyn is the only one who can lift the curse. The path to the tower, however, is littered with cursed beings and monsters.
The annoyingly talkative armor tries to advise Red Sonja about what’s ahead, but Sonja would rather the armor speak only when spoken to. Along the way, Red Sonja encounters cursed centaurs with acidic blood, a Green Knight who honorably represents the spirit of the forest, and when her sword breaks in battle, a Lady of the Lake who offers a sword with its own set of annoying rules.
We conclude the issue with no takebacks, more annoying rules, and an unreliable navigator.

Final Thoughts
IMMORTAL RED SONJA #2 is an entertaining issue that tones down the seriousness without getting too jokey or slapstick. The bickering between Red Sonja and her armor is entertaining, the Easter Eggs of myth and legend are fun surprises, and the art is generally serviceable.
