Is It Good?

HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #4 works. It works because it does one thing very well that sets it apart from most comics on the shelves. HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #4 creates stakes and inflicts consequences, and when the story has stakes and consequences, everything matters.

When last we left Artemis and her growing group of allies, she decided to venture into the Underworld to bring Hephaestus back to the land of the living. Hades, being the loving uncle that he is, agreed to let Heph go and also informed Artemis that her son is alive. Now, Artemis, Hephaestus, and Tempus are locked in a showdown with Athena to escape the Underworld.

Mork London’s script is super-solid from start to finish. Artemis’s angst, anger, and determination emanate from the pages like seething coals of fire when she learns her son lives (there are the stakes). The battle with Athena is brutal, gory, and final (and there are the consequences). Literally and figuratively, London isn’t pulling any punches in this issue. It helps that London paints the old gods on Zeus’s side as arrogant, narcissistic, and utterly punchable, so when you pair a righteous hero with a hateable villain, the sparks fly.

What’s not so great about this issue? Honestly, nothing worth noting. London’s technical writing execution is on-point, the story moves with the speed of Hermes, and the final page promises more drama in the next issue.

How’s the art? The art in this issue is probably the best of the series so far. Archdiacono and Deering deliver cool visuals, specifically in the battle armor worn by multiple characters. You’d be tempted to think battle armor is an odd point of focus for a review, but it stands out during Artemis’s fight with Athena. You’ll catch yourself studying the little details, and that’s a big plus.

Check out our HUNT. KILL. REPEAT #3 review to find out how Artemis’s meeting with Hades turned out.

We begin with Hephaestus and Artemis stepping through the portal to the Underworld into the land of the living while Tempus hides the knocked-out guards to buy time. Sadly, the time has run out as Athena and her cadre have arrived, but Athena orders her cadre to stay back so she can handle Artemis personally.

Before Artemis and Heph can reach the exit, Athena blacks the door to prevent their escape. And then they fight.

We conclude the issue with an axe, a submissive god, and a warning.

HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #4 earns top marks for not being afraid to get its hands dirty when Athena corners Artemis and Hephaestus. The art looks fantastic, and the action is brutal. If you want an urban fantasy/action comic that doesn’t pull any punches, this is it.

Score: 9/10
