Is It Good?

HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #3 is another excellent entry in an excellent series from Mark London and Mad Cave Studios. Why? Because London accomplishes in this issue what every issue in a comic arc should do – focus on one big idea and pay it off.

When last we left Artemis, she found temporary refuge with Tempus and Hephaestus as they planned to overthrow Zeus’s tyrannical reign. Aphrodite arrived to quell the rebellion before it began, leading to the death of Hephaestus and Aphrodite in the battle. Now, Artemis and Tempus enact a plan to get Hephaestus back from the Underworld, where Artemis will learn a shocking truth.

Again, the big success of this issue is in London’s execution, building up and paying off that one big idea – Artemis’s shocking discovery. Artemis’s discovery is a big deal in this story because it changes the trajectory and motivation behind everything Artemis is doing. With this new knowledge, the entire story has the potential to change in new, unexpected directions, so London nails a critical aspect of a multi-issue arc.

To be clear, the big idea isn’t the only reason to like this issue. London’s script works from practically every angle. The pacing is excellent, the dialog feels distinctive and natural for each character, and each character has an emotional beat to inform the readers about their respective motivations. This is a well-thought-out script from start to finish.

Coupled with London’s script is outstanding art from Archidiacono and Deering. The art team strikes a powerful balance between powerfully dramatic moments of tension during important dialog exchanges and kinetic fighting scenes involving Artemis. In particular, Archidiacono and Deering deliver nuanced facial acting and dramatic shadows to hit the reader with a strong visual impact.

What’s It About?

Check out our HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #2 review to find out how Aphrodite was defeated.

We begin with a flashback to Apollo and Artemis in their youth on Mt. Olympus. Artemis teaches Apollo about delivering a kill shot to make sure your prey stays down – a lesson that may come into play later. Now, Apollo and Zeus argue about how to handle Artemis in light of Aphrodite’s death.

Elsewhere, Tempus supplies soldier armor to Artemis to help her sneak into the gates of the Underworld. Unfortunately, Artemis’s choice to wear Julian’s scarf leads to an early discovery before she can cross the gate. Fortunately, Artemis is the greatest fighter in the world.

We conclude the issue with bodies, boat rides, bargains, and a shocking revelation.
