Is It Good?

Now we’re cooking with Ambrosia. In HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #2, Mark London cranks up the pacing and the action, nicely peppered with a dash of pathos, to deliver an excellent follow-up to issue #1.

When last we left Artemis, her attempt at living an idyllic life among the mortals was turned upside down when Zeus wiped out her partner, Julian, and sent her into a coma. When Artemis woke up years later, everything she knew was gone. Now on the run, Artemis is brought to Uncle Hephaestus, with the help of Tempus, to recover her wounds and consider how she will take her revenge.

London is firing on all cylinders in this issue. The pacing is faster than Zeus’s lightning bots without feeling rushed or incomplete. Every scene adds weight to the plot, fleshes out the world and characters, and builds momentum toward an inevitable clash between Artemis and her godly siblings. And the balance between character moments and action is fine-tuned. You get a lot of meat for money in this issue.

The art by Archidiacono, Deering, and Loughridge looks great in this issue. Sometimes urban fantasy stories lean too hard into the fantasy or the groundedness, and the presentation feels off, but not here. The art team strikes an intriguing balance between realism and magic to create a world that feels familiar but stands on its own as a place of magic and power. Plus, Artemis’s new armor looks badass.

What’s It About?

Check out our HUNT. KILL. REPEAT. #1 review to find out how Zeus earned the butt whoopin’ he’s about to get.

We begin with a brief flashback to the early days of Artemis and Julian’s blossoming romance. Those were happier times. Suddenly, the scene shifts back to the present as Tempus races to bring Artemis’s unconscious body to an underground camp and her uncle, Hephaestus.

Meanwhile, the sibling gods scramble and squabble over Zeus’s orders to retrieve Artemis at any cost. We learn some of the gods are sympathetic to Artemis’s plight, and others are inclined to follow Zeus’s orders without delay. The new hunt for Artemis stirs up old feelings of resentment and regret among Zeus’s children.

Later, Artemis wakes up to find Hephaestus putting the finishing touches on her new armor and a unique weapon for the battle to come. We conclude the issue with an unwelcome visitor, hitting the pause button, and a visit to another uncle.
