Analysis of HORNSBY & HALO #3:

Recap:

When we last left the teams from the Great Beyond in Hornsby & Halo #2, they started to get a handle on their powers when a biker gang rolled into town to present a challenge. It turned out the bikers were sent by a demon who wasn’t keen on maintaining the truce. Rose and Zach eventually stop the bikers, but their ordeal is far from over.

Plot Analysis:

Hornsby & Halo #3 begins with Zach dealing with the consequences of the damage to the limo from issue #2. His parents unfairly decide he needs to do extra work around the funeral home to pay for the damage. One afternoon, Zach overhears his parents talking with the graverobbers he filed in issue #1, and he recognizes bits of their story from his “dream,” including the pearl necklace swiped by the demon girl, which Zach recalls Rose wearing last issue.

Elsewhere, Rose busies herself at the homeless shelter run by her parents. Zach arrives with a stack of blankets to donate, and he asks Rose about her pearl necklace. Rose deflects the question, raising Zach’s suspicions. After he leaves the shelter, Zach breaks into Rose’s house and searches her room. He finds the sack containing money, jewels, and the pearl necklace.

The issue concludes with Rose ambushing Zach, their fight interrupted by a zombie horde, and a gift in the mail that unlocks Zach’s awareness.

First Impressions:

Meh. Similar to issues #1 and #2, Horsnby & Halo #3 is just… fine. If you’re into teenage levels of drama, story depth, and character development, maybe this issue will grab you.

Artwork and Presentation:

Likewise, Peter Snejbjerg’s artwork is… fine. The character designs are fine, Snejbjerg’s panel layouts are fine, and the scene progressions are fine. Nothing here will knock your socks off, and nothing here will bother you.

Story Positives & Negatives:

The Positives:

The big idea of this issue is the (maybe) revelation between Zach and Rose that they aren’t human. For readers who’ve liked this series so far, that revelation could be perceived as a wow moment.

The Negatives:

This issue, and the series as a whole, won’t grab you because there’s no clear idea of where this story is headed.

Jointly, Zach and Rose are the main characters, but what do they want? We don’t know, and neither do they.

Who or what is standing in the way of Zach and Rose getting what they want? Since they don’t know, the point is nearly moot, but you could surmise that breaking the truce is the problem… maybe.

What happens if the truce breaks? Technically, it’s not clear. Heaven and Hell may go to war, but if they do, to what end? The point of sending Zach and Rose to Earth is so they can gain a greater appreciation for each other’s origins so they will be better leaders when they eventually ascend to the thrones of their respective realms. How does exposing their identities prevent that from happening?

Everything about this issue is vague, so there’s nothing to invest in.

Final Thoughts:

HORNSBY & HALO #3 ups the ante on Zach and Rose’s weird life when a zombie horde attacks the town, exposing their secret to each other. Peter J. Tomasi’s middle-of-the-road script is serviceable, but it lacks a clear foundation or reason to care, and Peter Snejbjerg’s artwork is just okay.

Score: 5.5/10
