Is HERE COMICES CALICO #6 Good?
H.H. German sends Calico to deal with a deviant food processing business owner to save defenseless livestock and put a degenerate peddler of grotesque pleasures out of business. Keen readers will get an education on the depravity of processing livestock, especially chickens, and Calico gets into more action than he can handle.
When last we left Calico, he dealt with a mass murdering psycho who goes off the diabetic deep end while hunting down a tubby Hawaiian who specializes in streaming animal abuse for kicks and cash. Now, Calico infiltrates Bigmman Foods to put down the next lieutenant in Reginald Maxim’s crime organization, a woman who runs a slaughter mill and uses the animals for depraves acts on the side, while climbing the corporate ladder through incestuous means. Calico puts his new suit through its paces with stealth, mean fighting, and a fitting end to Bigmman Foods’s CEO.
The Calico series by H.H. German definitely falls into the “It reads better as a trade” category. Calico’s exploits in this issue rely heavily on the context of the previous issues. You’ll get the general gist, but background information is helpful.
Also, the Calico series has a firm anti-animal abuse message, with proceeds going toward animal rights advocacy groups. If you like a vigilante story that isn’t afraid to get rough, and you care about the protection of animals, this series is for you.
What’s great about HERE COMICES CALICO #6? More than the previous issues, Calico gets beaten on one front and comes close to losing on another. A hero who wins easily all the time isn’t very interesting, so German gives Calico challenging opponents that give the hero a reason to overcome.
What’s not so great about HERE COMICES CALICO #6? The primary criticism of this series remains in play – a difficulty in staying focused on the plot. Hector, aka Calico, engages in another sparring match at his regular boxing gym that showcases his abilities, but the scene contributes nothing to the plot. Calico encounters a woman attempting to abandon a dog in the woods and deals with the situation as only Calico can, but the scene contributes nothing to the plot. Somewhere amid the disconnected collection of schemes, the gangster known as O.B.D is staging a special drug import, but it’s not clear what the drug shipment has to do with saving animals.
Individually, German’s pieces make sense and add to Calico’s mythology, but the pieces don’t figure together.
How’s the art? Renato Pinto’s art style is outstanding. Everything from simple conversation to crazy gore looks great, and the level of detail rivals almost any indie comic around.

HERE COMICES CALICO #6 gives Hector a beatdown and puts the new suite through its paces when Calico infiltrates a grotesque food processing plant. The action is gritty, and the art is fantastic, but the story frequently gets distracted by unrelated scenes.
