Is It Good?
HEAVEN’S REJECTS #1 contains a kernel of a good idea. Wright’s story about rebellious angels (not fallen angels) who run a struggling bounty hunting agency has a certain charm and spark of imagination. The irascible characters and mediocre art may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the story has potential.
The bright spot of Wright’s script is its central premise. Stories about angels on Earth are nothing new. Angals who hunt demons are nothing new. What is new is the idea of putting delinquent angels in a bounty hunting agency, mixing the supernatural with a grounded action/adventure. Think of Charlie’s Angels crossed with The Fall Guy fused with The Powerpuff Girls. That mix gets you in the ballpark.
The down point in the writing is the grating personalities of the angels. There’s nothing wrong with having protagonists with a rough edge, but to get a reader behind the character, there has to be some redeeming quality underneath the gruff exterior. These angels are loud, crass, and rude. Killing demons isn’t enough to get you invested in them as characters. There has to be an emotional hook to establish a connection for the reader, and there isn’t one here.
The art is just okay. Sackett’s art style is better than an indie underground comic, but not by much. Character proportions and panel perspectives are frequently out of alignment, and the facial acting of the characters is often flat. However, Marques’s coloring elevates the pencils/inks enough to hide most of the weaknesses.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin in a lonely church in the middle of a South Western desert. A demon named Sunshine holds hostages inside the church, waiting for ransom money in exchange for their release. Suddenly, an angel named Honey barges in with her fellow angels, Berry and Raven, to dispatch the demon and free the innocent.
Later, the angels meet with their office manager, Harry Angel, to discuss their lack of funds. Harry encourages the angels to only work for payment, and the angels agree in principle, but they have too much fun killing demons.
Soon, a series of giant demon attacks begins outside the headquarters of Baphomet Industries, and the angels leap into action. We conclude the issue with a chatty head, a ruse, and a proposal.

Final Thoughts

HEAVEN’S REJECTS #1 is an interesting start to a new world by Wright. The main idea is intriguing, and the plot certainly isn’t boring. However, the characters lack emotion and depth, and the art is average at best.

Who are the 7 Fallen Angels?
Fallen angels are not specifically named in the Bible or any of the Abrahamic texts. However, Milton’s Paradise Lost names several angels as overseers of the different levels of Hell.
