Is HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #4 Good?
To catch everyone up, in the last issue, we explored themes of anger and rage within a young married couple dealing with overbearing in-laws. The pressure pushed them to the brink, leading to a wedge of rage between them. Although they managed to leave the haunted house at the last minute, the negative emotions lingered, infesting the very essence of the house.
In HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #4, titled “Bargaining,” the haunted house takes center stage in a new decade. A young couple, Dean and Pearl, investigating paranormal activity in neighboring towns, becomes entangled in the house’s sinister dealings. The mysterious Grinning Man appears, offering the house a chance at happiness if it can create discord between the couple. As they conduct a paranormal investigation, the couple faces the ultimate test, torn between their desires and the sinister bargain with the Grinning Man.
What We Liked About Haunted House: A Love Story #4: This issue excels in exploring the multifaceted conflicts and emotional spikes between couples and families. Gambro skillfully delves into different angles, offering a fresh perspective in each installment. Furthermore, we finally get more insight into the enigmatic Grinning Man, learning about his ageless existence and his ominous desires for souls. The issue’s strong horror elements and the impactful cliffhanger set the stage for the upcoming exploration of depression in the penultimate issue.
What We Didn’t Like About Haunted House: A Love Story #4: While the issue excels in horror, the aspect of bargaining and betrayal feels somewhat heavy-handed. The method the haunted house uses to create conflict between the couple lacks subtlety, leaving the depth of betrayal somewhat unclear. The limited time spent with Dean and Pearl hinders the development of their relationship, making it challenging to fully grasp the emotional rift that occurs.
Art Quality: Gambro continues to impress with his artistry, delivering eerie and creepy moments that enhance the overall atmosphere. The Grinning Man’s stronger presence and unique imagery contribute to the issue’s impact. The use of saturated tones during violent scenes effectively emphasizes the horror elements, showcasing Gambro’s versatility in storytelling through visuals.

HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #4 emerges as one of the stronger issues in the series, leaning heavily into horror. However, the limited exploration of the young couple’s relationship detracts from the emotional depth seen in previous issues. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, with the horror aspect excelling while emotional nuances take a back seat.
