Is HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #2 Good?
Heartache is a powerful motivator for anyone desperate to be rid of it. HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #2 continues the episodic series of heartache, centered on a “living house” that wants to be left alone with its memories, the ghost who remains inside, and the latest occupants’ struggle with the heartache of their own.
When last we left the Haunted House, a tale of a doctor and patient took a tragic twist when the patient’s house came to life from the love of its builder (the patient) and grew jealous of the doctor’s affections. The tale ended in heartache and death. Years later, a family moves into the haunted house, but the house wants them out while the father and mother grapple with a marriage in decline.
The timeframe of this issue isn’t specified, but it’s clear from the style of dress of the characters that it takes place several years after the first issue. The spirit of the house’s builder is a recurring presence in the haunted house, so we recommend you pick up the first issue to get the context of the spirit and why he wants everyone out.
What’s great about HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #2? Winston Gambro’s soulful, grounded story about a marriage in decline, set inside a haunted house, is a surprisingly poignant mix of romantic drama and the supernatural. Readers who like their ghost stories on the fanciful side should enjoy this issue.
What’s not so great about HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #2? The first issue established that the house is “alive” through the love and care of its builder. However, the builder is the only supernatural force presented, so it’s unclear what part the house plays in this story, if any. Without the house’s personality coming through, the series loses the unique hook from the first issue.
How’s the art? Gambro pulls double duty as writer and artist, so the visual presentation is on par with the writing as the two merge seamlessly. Gambro captures the emotional beats of Phillis and Lemuel (the father and mother) beautifully as they argue and mourn their marriage while the ghost finds ways to force them out.

Check out our HAUNTED HOUSE: A LOVE STORY #1 review to find out how the haunted house became haunted.
We begin with a new family moving into the haunted house years after the first owner’s death. Phillis, Lemuel, and their two daughters, Bessie and Flora, go about the business of unpacking and turning a house into a home. Phillis and Lemuel bicker over how to raise the girls and Phillis is increasingly frustrated by Lemuel’s constant time at work.
The haunted house wants the family out, so the owner’s spirit begins manipulating the girls by taking form to warn them away and by inhabiting a doll that directs the girls to take the furniture outside. Phillis begins to suspect the house is haunted and employs a medium against Lemuel’s wishes.
We conclude the issue with a Ouija board session, a blowup, and a change in living arrangements.
