Was It Good?

It’s not bad.

What works are the pencils and inks in the art. The characters look good, the quality of the drawing is professional, and the overall style has a Silver Age pulp style that’s charming.

What doesn’t work in the art is the lack of shading and texture. Normally, the colorist would fill in the blank spots to provide depth, but by going black and white while not getting more aggressive with the shading, the end result reads more like an unfinished coloring book.

The story also mimics the Silver Age silliness and leans into some tongue-in-cheek humor that’s self-aware enough to poke fun at its own silliness. By design, you can’t take the story too seriously.

What doesn’t work about the writing is the sheer volume of explanation and exposition for every point and every joke. The amount of reading needed to take it all in drags the pace to a crawl on some pages. It would help this book significantly to trim the excess and pick up the pace.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Detective Dale Lanier aka Gyrfalcon and his crew of costumed heroes, known as the Tenna Six, have officially disbanded after the events of the Calamity. Supervillains are no longer a problem, and the sanctioned super team is no longer sanctioned.

Detective Lanier receives an anonymous tip that a bomb is set to go off during a local hockey game. To avoid getting the former Tenna members in trouble, Lanier grabs his Gyrfalcon suit and heads to the hockey rink to search for the bomb alone.

Searching the tunnels and maintenance areas, Gyrfalcon is assaulted by an assortment of maintenance workers who are working with the bomber. Gyrfalcon learns the bomb isn’t some simple terrorist plot through a bevy of puns and wisecracks during the fisticuffs. It’s a ploy to force the Tenna out for retirement.

Eventually, word gets back to the police force and the other Tenna members about a ruckus at the hockey rink. When the Tenna notice Gyrfalcon’s suit is missing, they realize something big is going down.

The police and the Tenna (still in civilian clothes but using some of their super tricks) make it to the hockey rink before Gyrfalcon gets his feathers plucked.

How Does It End?

The real bomber is the last person you’d expect. Gyrfalcon almost rides off into the sunset for good. Some people like denim more than others.

Final Thoughts

GYRFALCON: CALAMITY AFTERMATH, available on ComiXology on January 6th, 2021, is a fun throwback to Silver Age comics. Despite the flat art and verbose pacing problems, this is an entertaining comic for the price.
