Is It Good?

GUNSLINGER #22 goes all out in pitched battle action when GunSlinger squares off against Clown while Dakota’s T-Rex faces off against Vindicator. It’s supernatural warrior versus supernatural warrior and giant beast versus giant beast. If you’re in the mood to widen your eyes and turn off your brain for some rock ’em sock ’em fun, this issue is it.

When last we left GunSlinger, he stepped onto the battlefield to face Clown and his diminutive cannibal doppelgangers and the beastial Vindicator. Now, Dakota sends her T-Rex to attack Vindicator to keep the monster busy while GunSlinger and Clown trade one brutal blow after another. As the fight progresses, Clown’s taunts reveal clues about Cogliostro’s plan for Hell.

Yes, the preceding descriptions sound repetitive, but that’s because there’s not much to this issue other than one big brawl. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re looking for deep pathos or complex story development, you’re looking in the wrong place. This issue is all about cool fights with amazing art.

What’s great about this issue? Booth, Corona, and King deliver the goods with spectacular visuals on every single page. If all the players are going to do is fight, the art better makes it darn interesting to hold your attention for 20+ pages, and that they do.

What’s not so great about this issue? Spawn comics, this one included, have a tendency to narrate the action at the risk of redundancy. Yes, we can see the T-Rex biting Vindicator’s arm, so there’s no need to tell us the T-Rex is biting Vindicator’s arm. Also, grammar and spelling mistakes abound, which is a no-no in a comic structured to rely heavily on narration. Grammarly is free, folks.

Speaking of letting the art tell the story, again, the art in this issue is fantastic and the best of any Spawn comic at Image. The line work, the detail, and Nunes’s untouchable coloring are spectacular.

What’s It About?

Check out our GUNSLINGER SPAWN #21 review to find out how dinosaurs joined the party.

We begin with the battle heating up. Javi, aka GunSlinger Spawn, fends off a swarm of mini-Clowns while Dakota’s T-Rex attacks Vindicator. Dakota wants to do more, but Clown’s magic has her trapped nearby. Dakota’s screaming taunts distract Clown long enough for Javi to leap on the Clown, distracting him enough for Dakota to break free.

Now, Dakota joins the fight, using her knowledge of Vindicator’s weaknesses to help where she can. We conclude the issue with death, bottomless pits, and a plan realized.

GUNSLINGER SPAWN #22 is all about the action as GunSlinger Spawn fights Clown while Dakota’s T-Rex fights Vindicator. Don’t look for deep character work or complex plot progression. This issue is all about the action, and it looks fantastic.
