Is GUNBREED #4 Good?

GUNBREED #4 departs from the standalone anthology model to give you two tales of terror with separate tales that continue from one to the other. Angel Fuentes goes all out to craft two short stories that tackle the grief and pain surrounding Sheriff Cain’s family when they were all alive in a surprisingly emotional narrative.

On the whole, this is the most emotionally resonant anthology in the series so far, which gives Sheriff Cain’s exploits heaps of motivation against anyone who dared to cross his family.

What’s GUNBREED #4 About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

As with all our anthology reviews, we’ll describe each short in brief and what did or didn’t work.

High Moon Tomorrow

Sheriff Cain is overcome by a deep spell of sleep by none other than the dream thief, Stingy Jack. Cain dreams of the time when his wife and son were still alive. However, all is not well when Stingy Jack disrupts a dangerous experiment that leaves his unborn daughter dead and his wife an emotional wreck.

Is it real? Is it a nightmare induced by Stingy Jack? Who knows, but Fuentes’s tale of a family torn apart by death and grief is a heartbreaker that makes you appreciate Sheriff Cain’s trauma and really makes you hate Stingy Jack.

A Fistful Of Whispers

After Sherriff Cain’s wife, Hannah, meets a tragic end, we follow her through the afterlife as she encounters one tortured soul after another. Eventually, she encounters the entity that drove her into depression – Stingy Jack. Hannah resolves to get her stolen dreams back, even if she has to beat Stingy Jack to a pulp to get them.

Fuentes takes the interesting step of continuing the first short and switching the main character from Cain to Hannah as she comes to grips with her life and death. Again, Fuentes slathers on the feelings of grief and regret for an emotionally poignant story.
