Is GUNBREED #2 Good?
GUNBREED #2, from Angel Fuentes and an assortment of guest artists, builds upon issue #1’s anthology to expand Cain’s lore and his daily life, foreshadowing greater challenges in the future. Issue #1 served as a strong introduction to Cain’s origin as a murdered sheriff brought back by the Angel of Death to protect a cursed town, but this issue builds on the previous one with more depth and texture.
In all, each of the three shorts earns a positive mark for telling a relatively complete story that adds to Cain’s legacy. Of the three, No Peace Given is the most entertaining, while His Weathered Bones has the most dramatic art. Fans of horror comics with an Old West twist will be pleased with this issue.

Check out our GUNBREED #1 review to learn how Sherriff Cain was brought back by the Angel of Death.
As with all our anthology reviews, we’ll cover each short in brief and what did or didn’t work.
His Withered Bones
William Murphy Cain, the Undead Sheriff, faces down monsters, demons, and a cadre of prisoners intent on escaping Hell. Cain uses the Gunbreed to dispatch the demons and undead, whatever their size, but no weapon can help him end the pain of his grief.
Following up the excellent first issue, Fuentes gives readers a view into a day in the (un)life of Cain as he makes his rounds to protect a cursed town. The gritty, rough art complements the gritty, rough town Cain is sworn to protect nicely.
No Peace Given
Cain is called to a Town Meeting chaired by the dearly departed reverend and all the lost souls in town. The deceased townspeople of Bajo Tierra are mighty perturbed they can’t move on, and they want to know what Cain intends to do about it.
Horror with a mildly humorous twist reminds Cain that even in death, you can’t please everyone. Fuentes amuses but doesn’t try to go overboard with the jokes, so the tone is just right. Maciorowski’s art is decent enough, but it wasn’t clear for several pages that the townspeople were dead, so the lines could have used more obvious details.
The Witch
A group of armed men ride into Bajo Tierra to find a witch on the run. When they corner her in the town’s saloon, Cain rides in to see what all the fuss is about. But not all witches are evil, and not all witch hunters are good men.
Given Cain’s history with witches, Fuentes uses the scenario to challenge Cain’s preconceived notions and foreshadow trouble on the horizon. The short is relatively complete, but this is a bigger story that needs more page space. On a positive note, Daniel Irizarri’s B&W art is solid.

GUNBREED #2 delivers three more short stories about Sheriff Cain and his undead mission to protect his cursed town. All the shorts are decently done and either expand Cain’s legend or foreshadow things to come. The guest artists vary in style and quality, but there isn’t a stinker in the bunch.
