Analysis of GUN HONEY: COLLISION COURSE #4:

First Impressions:

As finales go, Gun Honey: Collision Course #4 delivers everything you’ve come to expect from Charles Ardai. You have a bevy of beauties in tense action scenes, international intrigue, and deadly consequences for one or more characters. That said, this issue feels like a completely different ending that has almost nothing to do with the previous three issues, so it’s a mixed bag.

Plot Analysis:

When last we left Joanna Tan and Brook in Gun Honey: Collision Course #3, all forces converged on the vault to steal the priceless information contained within its walls. Getting in was no easy task when interlopers were confronted by a cadre of topless fighters. Sadly, Joanna’s enemy, Kruger, gained the upper hand, but their victory was short-lived when Joanna snuck into the vault and stole the intel, setting off the vault’s self-destruct explosion in the process.

In Gun Honey: Collision Course #4, we begin the finale in Paris during the Summer 2024 Olympics. After the tease in the previous issue, we know Director Morse and Kruger intended to use Brook as a patsy in a long plan to gain power from within the agency. After the events at Yamato’s vault, Joanna is free, but Brook is Kruger’s prisoner.

Admittedly, the details of how Joanna knew where to go, who she was after, and how she intended to stop whatever was about to happen are frustratingly hazy. Ardai proceeds as if the plot has been completely spelled out, so readers are forced to take it on faith that they can follow what’s happening.

Joanna steals a pass to get into the Olympic Village, posing as a Pentathlon competitor. There, she spies on every athlete who seems to be acting out of the ordinary, leading her to a Javelin thrower on the Italian team and a late-night visit at the outdoor baths between who Joanna thinks is Kruger and another undercover agent.

The whole mission comes to a head when Joanna learns the man she thinks is Kruger is really Brook under the influence of a powerful mind control drug directed by a remote earpiece by Kruger. His mission? Kill a Russian defector offering to turn himself and all his information in for a boatload of money.

The issue culminates in an old-fashioned standoff in a cabin, a Javelin thrower putting her skills to good use, and an offer with a huge payout.

Overall, the issue has everything you’re looking for – gunfights, James Bond levels of spycraft, international intrigue, and nudity. What’s missing? A plot that’s much clearer and easier to follow than this one.

Artwork and Presentation:

This comic is rated ‘Mature’ for a reason. You’re getting plenty of nudity and titillating action choreography to get your blood pumping. Ang Hor Kheng gives readers oodles of visual interest, in more ways than one, for a comic that balances out action and beauty in equal measure.

The Bigger Picture:

Historical Context:

The characters in this series are all fictional, but Charles Ardai adds a brief historical essay at the end of this issue. He lists some of the real-life individuals who inspired his characters, including his father and the Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines.

Final Thoughts:

GUN HONEY: COLLISION COURSE #4 ends with a climactic collision at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Charles Ardai’s script gives you everything you expect from a Gun Honey story, including energetic action and titillating developments. Plus, Ang Hor Kheng’s art is gorgeous. That said, the plot between this issue and the previous three reads like it’s part of a completely different story, so some readers may get lost.

Score: 6.8/10
