As finales go, this one is pulp noir shenanigans at its finest, with a healthy dose of grindhouse mixed in for good measure. Charles Ardai’s story is brimming with beautiful (and naked) women, gunfights, catfights, explosions, clever twists, and a new status quo for our titular (ahem) hero. If you like comics for sheer spectacle, this one’s got it all.
That said, the spectacle isn’t a distraction. It’s a complement to a well-paced, clever, tense action thriller. The twists and turns are surprising yet believable within context. The dialogue is excellent. And the conclusion establishes a new status quo for Joanna Tan and Agent Brook heading into the next series in 2023. In short, Ardai does exactly what should be done with a finale – satisfy, grow the characters, and leave you wanting more.
The art by Ang Hor Kheng is, of course, excellent. Kheng demonstrates a deft ability to convey excitement and energy as well as beauty. Again, there’s a lot of nudity in this book, but it’s presented in a way that makes sense for the scene, and Kheng delivers beautiful women in exciting situations to captivate and titillate in all the right ways.

We begin with a dancing show in progress where both Filippa Sterlin and Joanna Tan are undercover as dancers, but Filippa doesn’t know Joanna is there. It’s all a ruse for Filippa to get close enough to Bert, attending in a box sea, to kill him. Before the assassination can be carried out, Joanna leaps into action and fights Filippa to a standstill in the middle of the show. Bert’s men show up and capture both fighters.
Later, Filippa and Joann wake up tied to chairs in a secret location for Bert’s interrogation. Bert decides it would be easier to kill them both. Filippa, however, planned for the eventuality of being in the same room with two people she hates and executes a trap of last resort.
We conclude the issue with mysteriously hidden lock picks, another interrogation that looks bad for Agent Brook, and more explosions.
