Is It Good?

GUN HONEY: BLOOD FOR BLOOD #3 continues to impress with an action-packed, hard-hitting, gun-toting, titillating issue sure to get hard-boiled crime noir fans excited. In a roundabout way, Charles Ardai may have created the female spiritual successor to James Bond.

Charles Ardai’s script focuses on an extended flashback to Filippa’s upbringing and the personal connection to Bert & Ernie. Her origin is a revenge story in the making, and it makes perfect sense that she would become a double dealer as an excuse to kill the vaunted drug dealers in hiding. Ardai smoothly weaves the circumstances of Filippa’s life into the previous arc so that Filippa’s vendetta against Joanna Tan feels earned even though you’ve not met her before now.

Ardai inadvertently (or perhaps by design) creates a classic James Bond feel in this issue by revealing Filippa in her full glory as a giantess with physical prowess to match her height. Bond has Jaws, so Joanna now has Filippa, and Ardai is developing a (positive) pattern of putting foes in Joanna’s way that are physically unique. Using physically unique foes as a foil for Joanna’s spycraft positively elevates this story above standard boobs and guns crime fiction.

Ang Hor Kheng’s art style gets a rare moment to shine in the action department in this issue. Every issue of this series has had some action, but rarely this much. The fights and gunplay are rough, gritty, and brutal. Filippa and Joanna are, of course, gorgeous. And Rahman’s color palette creates a mod mood to enhance the smokey spy thriller feel.

What’s It About?

Check out our GUN HONEY: BLOOD FOR BLOOD #2 review to find out how Joanna Tan wound up on a death bus.

We begin with a flashback to years ago when Bert & Ernie were at the height of their experimental, recreational drug business. When the last batch accidentally killed a club full of people, neither would have guessed that two of the dead were Filippa’s parents.

Filippa spent years in and out of group homes and foster homes looking for a place to belong and find purpose. When the homes became more restrictive (and abusive), Filippa took matters into her hands one night when the latest foster parent took the abuse too far.

Agent Lydia found promise and potential in Filippa by taking her into personal custody and training her to become an elite assassin. Filippa’s loyalty was tested the day Lydia was killed by Joanna Tan’s brother. We conclude the issue with Bert & Ernie under the gun and a showdown at a stage show.
