Is GRIT N GEARS #6 Good?

Angel Fuentes’s steampunk/Old West fable comes to a close with a desperate battle to save Steam’s Eddy in GRIT N GEARS #6. This finale is notable because the final battle comes with a surprise twist you won’t see coming that works as an “Oh, Snap!” moment and adds a layer of emotional depth to Ranger One’s predicament as town savior and a new father.

When last we left Ranger One, Razorneck invaded Steam’s Eddy at the same time the Reverend arrived in his flying ship. The scene turned into a three-way battle with an impossible-to-predict outcome. Now, Razorneck has the upper hand with the Reverend strung up on a cross and Ranger One down on his knees while half the town burns. When Maple, formerly Maggie, rides into town to find Ranger One, the tables turn in the unlikeliest way.

Without spoiling the big twist, Maple is instrumental in saving the day without actually saving the day. Let’s just say Bullinger’s last words to Ranger One were meant to be taken figuratively and literally, and that’s all the hint you’re getting from us.

What’s great about GRIT N GEARS #6? This issue feels like a proper finale in the classic tradition of Western cinema. You get an “all hope is lost” moment, a surprising twist, and a satisfying, albeit not completely happy, ending.

What’s not so great about GRIT N GEARS #6? Overall, Fuentes delivers a pitch-perfect finale. But if we’re being picky, Fuentes never really explains how the automatons are able to pick up songs from the future. It’s an odd development that appears to have no purpose and never gets a full explanation. The future hearing/seeing ability is at least acknowledged in this issue, but it seems weird to introduce a time-warp story element without using it in the plot.

How’s the art? Nahuel Sb’s style suits the material to a tee, but there’s one area where Sb’s looseness creates a problem, and unfortunately, it’s in a spot where clarity is needed most. During the big surprise twist, something happens, but you can’t tell what’s happening until almost a page or two later because the art isn’t tight/clean. Unfortunately, the biggest moment of the series is obscured by sloppy art.

What’s GRIT N GEARS #6 About?

Check out our GRIT N GEARS #5 review to find out how multiple forces converged on a sleepy town at once.

We begin with Maple riding into town looking for Ranger One. The panicked townsfolk knocked her from her ride, leaving her wandering through the running crowd. She finds a damaged Ranger One at Razorneck’s feet while the Reverend and his helper hang from a nearby cross.

Maple charges Razorneck to prevent him from killing Ranger One, but she’s no match for the much larger automaton, and he kicks her away. The annoyed Razorneck takes aim at Maple, but Ranger One dives in front of the hail of bullets to protect his new daughter.

We conclude the issue with an unexpected development, a hostile confrontation, and a message from the past to the future.

GRIT N GEARS #6 ends the series with a shocking twist that turns the tables on Razorneck and adds an extra dimension of emotion to Ranger One’s relationship with Ranger One. Fuentes’s finale is a rollercoaster of tension, and Nahuel Sb’s art style suits the material to a tee.

Score: 8.5/10
