Is It Good?
Well, Keres and Spencer Homes are an unlikely pairing, but GRIMM SPOTLIGHT: LOVECRAFT’S LEGACY is the big issue that ties the last year of Lovecraft-themed adventures together. If you’ve been struggling to find the method to Zenescope’s madness, this issue may just be what you’re looking for.
Admittedly, we’ve become a little frustrated with Zenescope’s Lovecraft theme, primarily because the cross-title event lacks a clear focus. Which Old Ones are returning? Why now? What’s the plan? What do they need to enable their return? etc. etc. etc. Thankfully, this issue earns top marks for answering (almost) all those questions and more to give the year-long event some much-needed context.
Joe Brusha’s well-crafted script centers on Keres and Spencer Holmes teaming up to find the descendant of H.P. Lovecraft before the King in Yellow, a servant of Dagon, gets to him first. We won’t spoil any details here, but suffice it to say that the explanation makes sense for the event, it establishes high stakes for the entire planet, and the outcome creates a clear path for what needs to happen next. It would have been more satisfying to publish this story much sooner, but we’ll take what we can get.
How’s the art? Juan Francisco Mota’s art is excellent, and deserves bonus points for one reason above all others – Mota takes on the unenviable task of designing Lovecraftian monsters that are supposed to drive mortals insane just by seeing them. In case you’re worried, no, you won’t go mad reading this issue, but Mota’s creature designs look like they could pose a true threat to your sanity if brought into the real world.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Dagon summoning Hastur, aka the King in Yellow, for a special task – find the descendant of Lovecraft because his mind contains the location of the Nameless City where the Necronomicon resides. If Dagon gets the Necronomicon, the forces of evil can complete the last ritual to free Cthulu from his prison.
Unfortunately, the King in Yellow gets to the Monstary of Light first and retrieves the book containing the name of Lovecraft’s descendant. What follows is a heart-pounding chase as Keres and Spencer Holmes teleport from one location to another to rescue Lovecraft’s descendant from the King in Yellow’s clutches.
We conclude the issue with an interdimensional battle, insane horrors, and a new prize.
