Is It Good?
Simple, clear, and straight to the point. That’s the kind of adventure you get with GRIMM SPOTLIGHT: INFERNO, so if you’re looking for a solid reference point for one of the lesser-known characters in the Zenescope library, this is it.
The value of Ralph Tedesco’s script about Zenescope’s bounty hunter from Hell is the balanced mix of character setup and demon-hinting action, all rolled into a neat, efficient package. With this issue, you learn (almost) everything you need to know about Mercy Dante, including who she works for, what kind of work she does, and what’s at stake in her missions. GRIMM SPOTLIGHT: INFERNO is practically a perfect capsule story that sets the stage for everything that might come next.
Tedesco’s writing execution is rock-solid, a sad rarity these days among the larger comic publishers. The pacing is excellent, each character has a unique and memorable voice, the snappy dialog is engaging, and the ending is pitch-perfect. The only thing that’s missing from this issue (as a matter of taste rather than a technical gap) is a big wow moment. This is a tried and true story but not one that will blow you away.
Likewise, Maine and Arujo’s art team execution is rock-solid. The line and figure work are super clean, the demons are terrifying, the action is energetic, and the panel layouts are interesting.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a non-descript man named Bill entering a hotel for check-in. He doesn’t remember how or why he got there, but as soon as he leaves his room to look for answers, he’s attacked by a tentacled monster.
Now, Mercy Dante is summoned by her boss, Lucifer, to visit and shut down a self-help charlatan named Nora Gello. Nora is secretly tricking people to sign their souls away to gain power after her targets die. The sequestered souls throw off the natural order of things, and Mercy is tasked with setting them free.
We follow Mercy and her partner, Frank, to Las Vegas where the hotel amenities are not what they’re cracked up to be. We conclude the issue with mind reading, long-term plans, and unusual housekeeping.
