Analysis of GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #91:
Plot:
Grimm Fairy Tales (Vol. 2) #91 concludes the conflict against the Horde when the Dark One, Merran, and the Dark Princess force Orson to cast a spell that opens a portal to the afterlife. Why? The dark one intends to bring forth an army of the undead to conquer Myst and all the realms. Meanwhile, Ivy stops a possessed Skye from killing her mother. When the spell wears off, the guardians join forces and gather an army of Dragon’s Guard soldiers for a final battle. The issue ends with a betrayal, a retreat, and a reset.
Artwork and Presentation:
It’s fair to say Babisu Kourtis isn’t the cleanest artist, and here is where that lack of precision gets a big spotlight. Grimm Fairy Tales (Vol. 2) #91 culminates in an epic battle, but the lack of detail mutes that wow factor by miles. Kourtis’s style isn’t necessarily terrible, but it’s serviceable at best.
Art Samples:

Character Work:
Given how long writer Dave Franchini has written for the title, it would be odd if he didn’t perfectly capture the voice and interpersonal relationships of the characters such as Skye and Sela Mathers. That said, Sela Mathers goes through a mild change by the end that sets the stage for more stories going forward.
Pacing:
Franchini’s pacing is, in a word, uneven. Once the players are in place, the lion’s share of the issue is the big battle. Franchini’s action is steady but repetitive, so this issue is a case of the issue feeling like it’s taking longer than it really is because the extended sequence is actually a loop.
Strongest Point(s):
The highlight of this issue is the resolution that establishes a (mildly) new status quo for at least one player, Sela. Change is good. Change is necessary, so Sela’s update is the saving grace of this finale.
Weakest Point(s):
Art aside, the weak points of this issue are the uneven pacing and the monotonous battle.

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #91 ends the conflict against the Horde and the Dark One with a massive battle in Myst. Dave Franchini’s script delivers plenty of action and a status quo change for at least one character. That said, the climactic battle wasn’t as epic as it needed to be, and the art didn’t live up to the story.
