Is GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #79 Good?
For those familiar with the events in the Grimm Fairy Tales Annual 2024 issue, Baba Yaga collaborates with a group to resurrect—or, more accurately, bring to our world—Oblivione (with an “e” at the end). In the midst of the battle, a significant explosion occurs, and Skye is presumed dead. However, as revealed in this issue, Skye is trapped in the Dream Verse.
For enthusiasts who have read the Grimm Fairy Tales Annual 2024 issue, it is known that Baba Yaga is working with others to resurrect Oblivione. During this battle, there is a substantial explosion, and Skye is believed to be dead. In this issue, we discover that Skye is, in fact, trapped in the Dream Verse. For those familiar with H.P. Lovecraft’s work, this issue draws parallels to Lovecraft’s travels through the Dream Verse.
Sky’s journey through the Dream Verse mirrors Randolph Carter’s quest in Lovecraft’s “The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.” Much like Carter’s pursuit of the legendary city of perfection, Sky encounters the dream world’s underworld, replete with Gaunts, Ghouls, and struggles with Moonmen. These Moonmen, similar to Lovecraft’s lore, abduct unsuspecting travelers, transporting them to the Moon for use as slaves and sacrifices to the Elder Gods.
Throughout the narrative, Skye meets an Ultharian—a breed of intelligent cats capable of traversing the Dream Verse version of Earth and the Moon. The cat, named Aly, guides Sky through her travels, drawing a parallel to Randolph Carter’s journey in Lovecraft’s original story. The storyline includes encounters with Moonmen in black galleons, attempting to transport individuals and cargo to the Moon for unholy purposes. Aly aids Sky in escaping, leading to a crash landing on a planet before reaching the Moon. The journey involves sacrifice, pain, and destruction.
Regarding first impressions, this marks the second year of Zenescope’s exploration of Lovecraftian themes. To Franchini’s credit, he adeptly adapts Lovecraft’s peculiar narrative into a comic format, making it accessible and straightforward. While some elements are inevitably omitted, the adaptation succeeds in maintaining readability. Babisu Courtis’s art is improving, with cleaner lines and intriguing panel layouts. The esoteric nature aligns well with the Lovecraftian theme, ensuring reader engagement.
However, certain aspects of the art warrant critique. Courtis’s linework, particularly angles, tends to appear excessively dark and occasionally scratchy, bordering on sloppy. Additionally, Jorge Cortes’s color selections are commendable, but the digital application, especially in transitions and fades between highlights and darker sections, exhibits a somewhat pixelated appearance.

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #79 is good, particularly for Lovecraft enthusiasts and Zenescope fans interested in the merger of the two themes. While the art has room for improvement, the story progresses smoothly, bridging Sky’s escape from the Dream Verse. A more prolonged exploration within the Dream Verse could enhance the narrative.
