Is It Good?

Well, GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #68 is fine. It’s not bad, and it’s not great. GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #68 is decent enough, which means there’s more good than bad.

When last we left Sky and the Shang Gang, Baba Yaga snatched Tamora away to take part in an evil ceremony to bring the Old Ones back from the unknown darkness of infinity. Armed with Baba Yaga’s magical dagger, Skye sets out to track down Baba Yaga, get Tamora back, and put an end to Baba Yaga’s plan.

This issue is a straightforward Grimm Fairy Tales adventure, so you get plenty of magic and monsters, and the Shang Gang working together with their eclectic array of personalities. If you’re a Zenescope fan, you get exactly what you paid for and exactly what you expect.

That said, the benefits are also down points. The eclectic personalities, particularly among the Musketeers are immature and, at times, annoying. If you peel back the layers on this issue, the gang walks down a lot of stairs, splits up, and comes back together for a confrontation with Baba Yaga. There’s not a lot of substance to the journey, so Franchini works in interest with a lot of talking. Some of it is interesting, but much of it isn’t.

Also, getting exactly what you expect leaves little room to be surprised. This arc started off strong with a mashup retelling of Lovecraft stories integrated into the Grimm universe. Now, most of the Lovecraft elements are gone in favor of a standard Grimm magic fight, and the story is starting to feel generic.

Likewise, Babisu Kourtis’s art style is okay, but not great. The line work is rough (almost sloppy) in spots, but it’s good enough to get the job done.

Check out our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #67 review to find out how Tamora was captured.

We begin with Skye reflecting on the battle to come. She accepts her fate as the Guardian of the Nexus but resolves to keep everyone who fights with her safe. Skye and the ShangGang head off to find Baba Yaga and rescue Tamora.

Later, Skye and the ShangGang fight their way through underground corridors and hallways to reach the final chamber where Baba Yaga holds Tamora. Outnumbered, Skye and her friends have no choice but to surrender. We conclude the issue with one Guardian as good as another and a new arrival.

Final Thoughts

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #68 brings the world to the brink of destruction as Baba Yaga’s plan enters its final phase. The writing is decent enough, and the art is serviceable, but the overall plot of the arc has started to become generic, and the art quality is not Zenescope’s best.

Score: 7/10
