Was It Good?

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #60 continues Skye and Julia’s universe-hopping exploits as they partner up with a collection of survivors on a version of Oz where vampires rule and Dorothy is their queen. Generally, this is a solid issue. The dialog sounds natural, there’s plenty of action, the plot moves forward, and the villains pose a substantial threat.

However, the arc is becoming (as we noted in previous reviews) becoming repetitive. Skye and Julia jump to a new universe that’s in shambles, they have to fight their way through doppelgangers of friends and enemies, then they zip off to the next universe. That’s not a bad model as long as you get some sense that each (Quantum) leap makes progress on the story or the characters grow from the experience. Neither is happening, and any progress made comes through Shang and his efforts to bring Skye home via Baba Yaga.

In other words, everything related to Skye and Julia’s adventures is filler while readers wait for Shang’s arc to play out. If you like these characters and don’t mind repetitive action, there’s a lot to like in this issue. If you want the story to feel like it’s moving somewhere, this issue lacking.

To be fair, this is not a badly-constructed issue. The down point is that the creators seem to be telling a modified version of the same story over and over again. We need more.

The art from Kourtis and Cortes is strong. The artists cram in tons of action, so you get plenty of eye candy. The panel composition is excellent, and the colors pop. Visually, this is a great issue.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

If you don’t recall how Skye and Julia wound up in an Oz run by vampires, read our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #59 review.

We begin with Skye and Julia walking along the yellow brick rod with her allies as she searches for the red gem to power the teleporter. As they walk, they talk about Skye’s adventures and the teleporter that brought her here. Skye expresses either guilt or responsibility because saving all the universes, not just her own, may fall to her.

Suddenly, the group is attacked by flying apes and Thorne the Lion. The allies hold their ground, but the numbers quickly overwhelm them. Out of desperation, Sela reveals she has the red gem and tries to take the teleporter from Skye to conjure an escape path. In the tussle, Sela loses the gem, and the monkeys fly back to the Emerald City with the gem and several hostages.

Meanwhile, Shang, Samantha, and Allexa are surrounded by the Scorpion Queen’s forces who have orders to execute them. Shang goads the Scorpion queen into attacking him personally. Shang uses the ploy to conjure a portal that teleports them all back to Baba Yaga’s mountain.

We conclude the issue with a fair fight, an unfair hostage situation, and a no-win scenario.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #60 has plenty of colorful action, solid dialog, and genuine stakes, but the main plot with Skye and Julia is a rehash of the same story retold multiple times in this arc. Shang’s efforts carry the story, and that’s too much weight to bear for a supporting character in a B Plot.

Score: 7/10
