Was It Good?
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #59 takes a break from the one-and-done universe hopping to explore a world that has all but given up on hope in favor of survival. This is one of those interesting comics that poses an idealogical dilemma from multiple angles, leaving the reader something to think about instead of telling you what to think. What would you do in a dying world that has no way to recover? Would you give up or would you press on?
Franchini delivers a refreshingly mature take on that question by depositing Julia and Skye in an alternate world where the vampire infestation has all but bled the human population dry but for a handful of survivors. The dilemma squarely focuses on the value of hope and how far can you rely on it before reality becomes too overwhelming to resist. Franchini places Skye in a role that mixes protagonist and antagonist as she confronts battle-weary heroes over their lack of hope. The confrontation leads you to see both sides of the argument without any clear sense of who’s right or wrong, and it’s thought-provoking stuff.
This issue also ushers in the first appearance of an alt-version of a character we haven’t seen before. The last page reveal stands as a strong twist cliffhanger, and it will be interesting to see what happens next.
The art in this issue is serviceable. The pencils and panel composition are good, but the inks are rough in several spots, giving off a slightly rushed feel. Some panels are better than others, but the roughness is noticeable.

What’s It About?

Before going into the description, first read our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #58 review to catch up.
We begin in Oz with Shang, Sam, and Alexxa fighting their way through an army of the Scorpion Queen’s minions. Shang desperately looks for a mage who’s key to Shang’s plan. Unfortunately, the Scorpion Queen has the mage in custody.
Meanwhile, Skye and Julia head back to the base in a vampire-infested world. They were separated for a week, and while Skye thought she was completely alone before being found, Julia found refuge with the few surviving heroes. When they return to base, Skye finds the survivors physically and emotionally scarred by this world’s collapse. As they talk, Skye encourages and then pushes to remind them to have hope. The heroes, infinitely more cynical due to their losses, push back with the belief that survival is the only option left.
We conclude the issue with Shang standing down, a compromised safehouse, and Skye seeing a familiar face.

Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #59 is a thought-provoking issue as the main characters are confronted with a world that’s lost everything and is on the verge of annihilation. The philosophical question of “How long do you hold on to hope?” is front and center, and Franchini gives you plenty of reason to consider both sides of the question. The writing is strong, and the art is generally good, but a few rough spots with the inks brings the visual appeal down a notch or two.
