Was It Good?
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #58 is okay. The novelty of having Skye and the assorted circle of friends hopping through realms and alternate universes has its appeal, but the appeal is starting to wear thin.
Up to now, the arc has focused on Skye hopping from one reality to the next on her path toward getting home. The fun of this adventure stems from taking the existing characters and reimagining them in creative ways without repercussions to canon or the timeline. It’s a neat idea that gives the creators plenty of room to go crazy without “breaking” anything. That said, the universe hopping is starting to tip towards repetitive, and rather than stretch each universe across multiple issues in a mini-arc, the jumps are one-and-done in a single issue. In short, the fun is not so fun anymore.
In fairness, the adventure here is solid. Skye gets to play in a personal version of Castaway when she believes she’s truly alone in this decimated world. This world’s version of Mystere arrives, and Skye gets a hard look at what years of isolation can do to a person. And, the Shang Gang’s race to find a way to bring Skye home gets increasingly dangerous. Again, all the pieces for a great comic are present, but the down point is how repetitive it’s starting to feel.
There’s a secondary down point to this issue which is a surprise coming from Zenescope. It’s the art.
Zenescope has a reputation, for better or worse, of ensuring all their comics at least meet a minimum house style of quality. In this issue, the art is not great. The linework is rough. The character movements and actions feel flat, and the overall look of this issue lacks the typical Zenescope spit and polish.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Skye was accidentally separated from Queen of Hearts during their last hop. Read our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #57 review.
We begin with a brief recap of Skye’s universe-hopping adventures. Now, she finds herself alone in a ruined world devoid of life. The isolation takes its toll as Skye uses a rock as an inanimate companion for conversation. Suddenly, Skye hears a voice and turns to find alt-Mystere has found her and bids her follow back to safety before any predators pick up their scent.
Back at Mystere’s safehouse, Skye learns this world was overrun by vampires coming through portals. Myter and friends eventually managed to see the portals but not before catastrophic damage was done. As the two talk, Skye sees Mystere becoming increasingly erratic and notices Mystere hears voices coming from the portal gem she wears as a necklace.
Skye offers to show Mystere how to use the gem to open a portal to another universe and invites Mystere to come with her. The more Skye offers to help, the more paranoid Mystere becomes and the conversation quickly becomes hostile when predators pick up their scent.
We conclude the issue with a three-way battle, the Shang Gang looking for mystical help and finding something worse, and vampires.

Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #58 is a so-so issue in the ongoing Dark Princess saga. Skye’s mini-adventure on a dead world is fine, but the universe hopping is quickly becoming repetitive. Also, the art quality in this issue is noticeably lower than typical Zenescope quality.
