Was It Good?
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #57 raises an interesting moral dilemma that you’re more likely to find in an episode of Star Trek or Doctor Who. When you’re not from the planet/dimension you’re currently battling on, how far should you go to save a world that’s not your own?
The question is asked but not quite answered in this issue. However, the ending is satisfying enough because fate intervenes, leaving readers with the best possible outcome – allowing readers to decide for themselves what they would do in the same situation. When we talk about stories with a moral message, the result is almost always better when the creators present the issue from opposing points of view that lead to an ending that fits the story without lecturing or sermonizing.
If you want more details about what happened in this issue, read through to the next section. The bottom line is that Franchini put together an action-pack and thought-provoking end to this leg of Skye and Julia’s journey.
Except for a few pauses, this issue is wall-to-wall action and Kourtis pulls off all the energy and drama with each blow beautifully. The character’s move with momentum and power, and the destruction caused by the mayhem look positively earth-shattering.
The minor down point in the art is the coloring. The color palette is fine, but the blending and shading, especially along the fine edges, look rough. It’s not bad enough to call it paint-by-numbers but the detailed blending is lacking.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Before you see how it all ends, catch up on where we left off with our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #56 review.
We begin with Detective Murphy at the mercy of the Serpent King’s goons when he’s gunned down without mercy. Meanwhile, Skye, Julia, and alt-Belle are trapped in an underground storeroom with Belle’s beastly brother. Julia wants to kill the beast but alt-Belle pleads for a chance to get through to him. Skye agrees with Belle.
Julia compromises and knocks out the beast with a flash-bang grenade. The trio then makes a plan that will get them out of captivity and provide a distraction for escape.
Elsewhere, Detective Murphy wakes up in an afterlife limbo where a Grim Reaper offers him a chance to return to Earth and see his family as long as he obeys the Reaper’s commands to acquire souls. Murphy agrees and suddenly appears before the Serpent King’s gang as Death’s Head.
We conclude the issue with Skye formulating a plan for escape that works (sort of), alt-Peyton and alt-Belle taking their revenge (sort of), and Skye and Julia escaping back to their Earth (sort of).

Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #57 is chock full of gunfights, gangsters, and monster mashing galore. The action is full of energy and mayhem, the art looks (generally) very good, and the story concludes the current leg of this arc with interesting moral questions about responsibility for a world that isn’t your own.
